This article compares Claude and ChatGPT by running them through five accounting firm tasks: general ledger review, bank reconciliation, payroll journal entry creation, financial modeling, and client dashboard creation. Claude excels in understanding intent, writing, and design, while ChatGPT performs well in structured tasks. Both are valuable, but Claude often produces more user-friendly outputs.
Hey, this is Isaac from Assure.co, an automation agency that has worked with over 100 accounting firms. Recently, there has been a lot of buzz about Claude outperforming ChatGPT, but does it really make a difference for the daily work of an accounting firm? To find out, I tested both Claude and ChatGPT on five common accounting firm use cases to see if there is a real difference.
Let's dive into each test and see how Claude and ChatGPT performed.
I used a simplified general ledger file with a couple dozen transactions and inserted five intentional issues:
Claude reviewed every line item and flagged all five issues accurately. It also provided concise explanations and went beyond the financials by noting potential tax implications of certain categorizations. Claude understood the intent behind the prompt well and did not take instructions too literally.
ChatGPT also found all the planted issues but took the prompt very literally, creating a table with every line item. This made the output more verbose and less concise.
Claude wins this test for its better understanding of intent and concise, insightful output.
The task was to identify discrepancies between a bank statement and recorded transactions, including an outstanding check that was a timing difference, not an error.
Claude identified the recording error and correctly flagged the outstanding check as a timing difference. It created a detailed Excel workbook with multiple tabs, including reconciling items and transaction details, making it easy to review and sign off.
ChatGPT followed a similar process and identified the same issues. However, it produced a more repetitive output with an additional summary tab that Claude did not provide.
Both models performed very well and created usable Excel work papers. This test is a tie.
Given a payroll register with six employees across three departments, the task was to create a payroll journal entry allocating wages by department, including employer taxes and net pay, in a QuickBooks Online (QBO) format.
Claude produced a detailed journal entry with journal number, date, accounts, debits, credits, descriptions, names, and classes. It even created a naming convention for the journal number. However, it did not initially produce an Excel or CSV file without prompting.
ChatGPT understood the QBO format requirement from the start and produced a similar output. However, it included a total that complicates direct import, requiring manual adjustment.
ChatGPT wins this test for better initial formatting and understanding of the QBO import structure.
The task was to create a 12-month forward projection table including revenue, cost of goods sold, gross profit, operating expenses, and net income, following given assumptions and making reasonable adjustments.
Claude built a 12-month projection with 143 formulas, added comments for clarity, and included a net margin column for easy reference. It allowed dynamic changes to assumptions and updated the model accordingly.
ChatGPT created a similarly structured model with dynamic formulas and even added conditional formatting to highlight changes. However, there was an inconsistent formula noted.
Both performed well and produced functional financial models. This test is a tie.
Given a full-year P&L with monthly breakdowns, the task was to create a dashboard understandable by a non-accountant business owner, highlight key trends and concerns, and draft an email to the client explaining the business story.
Claude produced a visually appealing HTML dashboard with charts, color coding, and clear, jargon-free explanations. It highlighted both positive and negative trends and provided two email versions: warm and personal, and brief and professional.
ChatGPT created a more basic, less user-friendly dashboard with some unnecessary technical details. The email was longer and less concise, with only one version provided.
Claude wins this test for better storytelling, design, and client communication.
ChatGPT has improved significantly in handling documents and Excel tasks. However, Claude excels in writing, design, and understanding the intent behind prompts, producing more human-like and user-friendly outputs with less prompting.
Does the Claude versus ChatGPT debate matter? In the short term, yes, especially for tasks requiring nuanced understanding and presentation. In the long term, the key question is how you use AI in your firm. Firms that consistently integrate AI into workflows with improving prompts will benefit more than those that do not use AI at all.
Ultimately, both Claude and ChatGPT are valuable tools for accounting firms, and choosing between them depends on the specific tasks and desired outputs.
