I do not need to remind you of the significance of your work or the scope and scale of the challenges confronting Australia regarding the acute and chronic effects of climate change. As a government, we are committed to addressing these challenges, which necessitates an ambitious and practical emissions reduction agenda. This requires new approaches to protect and support Australian communities against the unavoidable impacts of climate change.
That is why the Albanese government has allocated more than $3.6 billion in direct funding measures aimed at making Australia more resilient to our changing climate. In doing so, we are investing in the best climate science available to inform our decision-making processes.
Last month, alongside Minister Bowen, I released Australia's first national climate risk assessment and an accompanying national adaptation plan. The ENCRA, as we refer to it, is the most comprehensive, detailed, and science-backed climate risk assessment ever produced in Australia. Commissioned by our government from the Australian Climate Service, the ENCRA will position us better to undertake the informed, concerted, and coordinated work required to tackle climate risks.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the contributions made by Natural Hazards Research Australia to the national assessment. Their involvement ranged from informing the initial assessment to participating in last year's national workshop and providing expert advice on risk ratings.
There is no question that some projections in the assessment are alarming. For instance, under a 3-degree global warming scenario, Western Australia could see the number of severe and extreme heatwave days quadruple. This outcome will have harmful effects across our community, environment, and economy.
Building resilience requires a united effort that combines science, policy, and practical, measurable action. This showcase exemplifies that kind of approach. I want to thank Natural Hazards Research Australia for its commitment to translating research into tools and strategies that empower emergency services and communities.
