Welcome to First Baptist Gulf! Whether you are joining us in person or online, we are thrilled to have you with us today. Our service began with the joyous celebration of baptisms, a powerful reminder of the new life we have in Christ.
Our first baptism was Sawyer Switzer, an outgoing eighth grader who will soon be a freshman at Gulf High School. Sawyer is an active member of our youth group and a dedicated youth leader. She has been a beacon of light in her school, creating handmade signs that invite her peers to learn about Jesus. Today, she publicly proclaimed her faith in Christ.
As she stepped forward, I asked her, "Who have you placed your faith in for salvation?" With a joyful heart, she replied, "God!"
It was my pleasure to baptize her in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, symbolizing her new life in Christ.
Next, we celebrated the baptism of John Walker Free, my oldest son. John had expressed his desire to be baptized several months ago, and after much discussion, he decided he was ready. He shared that he wanted to wait until he turned seven, which he did just before Easter. After a children's sermon, he felt the urge to take this step of faith.
When I asked him who he placed his faith in for salvation, he confidently said, "Jesus!" I baptized him, celebrating his commitment to follow Christ.
After the baptisms, we gathered the children for a special sermon. We played a game where they had to find a hidden stuffed turtle, which they did quickly. Then, we introduced a more challenging task: finding a picture of a whale that was only in my mind. This led to a discussion about how God knows our thoughts and feelings, referencing Psalm 139:1-3, which emphasizes that God knows us intimately.
We talked about how God sees not only our actions but also our hearts. Despite our flaws and sins, He loves us and desires a relationship with us. The message concluded with a prayer, thanking Jesus for His sacrifice and asking for help to love Him more each day.
As the children returned to their families, we continued our worship through music. We sang songs that celebrated God's holiness and power, reminding us of His greatness and our need for Him. The congregation joined together in heartfelt praise, lifting our voices in adoration.
This morning's sermon focused on the parable of the prodigal son from Luke 15. This parable illustrates the themes of grace, repentance, and the joy of reconciliation. Jesus tells the story of a man with two sons, highlighting the younger son's reckless choices and the father's unconditional love.
The younger son demands his inheritance, essentially wishing his father were dead. He squanders his wealth in reckless living, only to find himself in desperate need during a famine. This part of the story reflects our own lives when we chase after worldly desires, leading to emptiness and despair.
In his desperation, the younger son realizes that even his father's servants have enough to eat. He decides to return home, rehearsing his apology. As he approaches, his father sees him from a distance and runs to embrace him, demonstrating unconditional love and forgiveness. The father restores him to his position as a son, celebrating his return with a feast.
The parable doesn't end with the younger son. The older brother, who has remained faithful, becomes angry at the celebration for his wayward sibling. He feels entitled to his father's favor and struggles with jealousy. The father's response to the older brother emphasizes that all he has is also available to him, inviting him to join in the celebration.
The message of the prodigal son is a powerful reminder of God's grace and the joy of reconciliation. Whether we identify with the younger son, who has strayed, or the older brother, who struggles with pride, we are all invited to experience the father's love.
As we concluded the service, we extended an invitation for anyone who felt led to respond to the message, whether through salvation, baptism, or joining our church community.
Today was a beautiful reminder of the transformative power of God's love and the joy that comes from new life in Christ. Let us carry this message of grace into our lives and share it with others.
