
2024 is projected to be the hottest year on record, with significant climate impacts including extreme temperatures, rising sea levels, and increasing greenhouse gas emissions. However, there are signs of hope with the rapid adoption of renewable energy technologies and electric vehicles.
As we approach the Christmas break, many of us are busy preparing for the festivities ahead. In this brief update, we will explore the current state of our climate and energy transition as we head into 2024. This information may also come in handy during those long discussions about climate change over holiday dinners.

Looking at the climate and energy transition perspective, 2024 is set to be a historic year. According to a recent report by the EU Space Programme, it is virtually certain that 2024 will be the first year on record with an average global surface temperature 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial levels, potentially reaching closer to 1.6 degrees. This increase pushes us beyond the limits set by the 2015 Paris Agreement and into a precarious zone described by Professor Johan Rockstrom as "the corridor of life."
This temperature rise is not uniform; some regions are experiencing much hotter conditions than others. Southern Europe, for instance, is already facing severe heat stress, with temperatures regularly exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). Such extreme heat poses significant health risks, especially for those working outdoors.
One of the most alarming developments in 2024 has been the sharp increase in ocean temperatures. Our oceans have absorbed over 90% of the greenhouse gas-induced heating since the industrial revolution, but they are not an infinite reservoir. Scientists are concerned that warming waters may begin to release heat back into the atmosphere, exacerbating climate issues.
The increased evaporation from warmer oceans contributes to more intense rainfall and extreme flooding events worldwide. A recent global climate and health analysis published in The Lancet highlighted a marked increase in extreme precipitation events, defined as those exceeding the 99th percentile of daily precipitation from 1961 to 1990. While some regions are inundated with rain, others are suffering from severe heatwaves and droughts. Nearly half of the planet experienced at least a month of extreme drought in 2024, with over 10% suffering for half the year.
As water expands with warming, sea levels are rising, compounded by the melting of land-based ice in Greenland, Antarctica, and the Himalayas. This melting disrupts the sustainable water cycle that millions rely on, leading to devastating consequences for communities along coastlines.
Despite the accelerating risks, the global response has been mixed. While some countries are making strides, overall levels of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane continue to rise. According to the Global Carbon Budget, global greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels were about 8% higher in 2024 than in 2015, marking a significant failure in our climate commitments.
Adding to the challenges, the incoming U.S. president has expressed intentions to roll back climate policies, which could hinder progress while other nations strive for ambitious carbon reduction targets by 2030.
Despite the dire situation, there are positive developments worth noting. The world is rapidly adopting renewable technologies such as solar, wind, and battery storage, with China leading the charge. It is anticipated that China may reach peak emissions in early 2025 as infrastructure expansion slows and electric vehicles become more prevalent.
Contrary to some media narratives, electric vehicle sales are not declining. Data shows that global adoption of electric vehicles continues to rise, indicating a shift towards more sustainable transportation options.
The climate situation is serious, and there is much work to be done. As we enter 2025, it is crucial to remain proactive. Whether through peaceful activism, reducing meat consumption, switching to electric vehicles, lobbying representatives, or divesting from fossil fuel investments, every action counts. Consider making a New Year's resolution to contribute to climate action.
