Good morning, Resonate Church family! It is a joy to connect with you all, both online and at our campuses in Hayward and Oakland, as well as our new campus in Vallo. Today, we continue our teaching series titled "Made for This," where we explore ancient pathways in spiritual disciplines that have been practiced by followers of Jesus throughout history. Inspired by the words of the prophet Jeremiah, we are reminded to seek the ancient paths that lead to rest for our souls.
Today, I have the privilege of discussing the ancient path of prayer. Prayer is a practice that has been integral to the lives of believers since the beginning of time. Over my 25-plus years of walking with Jesus, I have developed a deep passion for prayer, though it wasn't always this way. I want to share my journey with you, as it may resonate with your own experiences.
Growing up in church, I often heard the same application point at the end of sermons: "Read your Bible and pray." After hearing this repeatedly, I found myself feeling uninterested in prayer. It seemed basic and lifeless, and I felt unequipped to engage in it meaningfully. No one had taught me how to pray, and I often felt lost when others prayed eloquently.
As I continued my Christian journey, there were seasons where I knew how to pray but felt unengaged. I struggled with feelings of abandonment, believing that God was not listening or answering my prayers. I often prayed for meals but rarely sought God in deeper ways. Eventually, I became unsatisfied with my prayer life, longing for more fulfillment and connection.
Despite these struggles, I have come to a place where I am unapologetically passionate about prayer. I envision a church filled with individuals who love to seek the Lord through prayer, recognizing its importance in our lives. This transformation was largely influenced by my mentor, Pastor Daniel Henderson, who helped me understand the significance of prayer and the regrettable realities of prayerlessness.
