At the age of 14, the narrator was deeply involved in the Christian community, attending Bible study, youth nights, and church services three times a week. However, a significant shift occurred during a Wednesday Bible study when he discovered contradictions in the Bible. When he raised his concerns, the youth Bible teacher admitted he was unaware of these contradictions, leading the narrator to question the validity of his faith.
Feeling spiritually abandoned, he continued attending church but lost interest in religion altogether. His teenage years were filled with typical pursuits—football, surfing, and girls—while he drifted away from any moral compass.
In an attempt to regain control of his life, he joined the military, where he learned about responsibility and accountability. However, upon leaving the military, he fell back into old habits, including drinking and drug use. His life spiraled further when he committed armed robbery, not out of necessity but for the thrill, leading to his incarceration in a maximum-security prison.
Entering prison was a shocking experience for someone who had never been arrested before. He found himself surrounded by violent criminals and faced the harsh realities of prison life, where racial segregation dictated social interactions. The constant tension and aggression in prison were mentally and emotionally exhausting, leaving him on high alert at all times.
Despite the oppressive environment, he encountered a Turkish inmate named Omar, who approached him with a desire to talk about Islam. Initially skeptical, the narrator had little knowledge of the religion but was intrigued by Omar's perspective on nature and the universe, which resonated with his own curiosity about creation.
As their conversations deepened, Omar gifted the narrator a Quran, encouraging him to read it. The narrator was surprised to find that the stories within the Quran mirrored those in the Bible, yet he was initially discouraged by the thought of contradictions. Omar explained the preservation of the Quran and its significance, which piqued the narrator's interest.
Over time, he became increasingly impressed by the teachings of Islam and the dedication of its followers. He attended Juma, the Friday prayer service, where he was struck by the sincerity and humility of the worshippers. The experience of seeing the congregation pray in unison profoundly impacted him, leading him to reflect on the spiritual depth he had been missing.

Despite his concerns about being a white American in a predominantly non-white religion, he expressed his desire to convert to Omar and the other inmates. They welcomed him with open arms, affirming that Islam is a universal faith for all people.
On that day in October 1991, the narrator pronounced the shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith, marking the beginning of his new life as a Muslim.
