Welcome back, my friends. Today, we are reminded that God keeps His promises. If He promises to console us, He will. As we wait for His consolation, we should always be looking for the people He sends into our lives to help us. Additionally, we should consider how we can be that person to help others.
In the Gospel of Luke, we meet Simeon, a righteous and devout man who looks forward to the consolation of Israel. This means he lives a holy life, following the Ten Commandments and being kind and charitable to others. It is essential to observe how people treat those around them; if someone is nice to you but rude to a waiter, that is a red flag. Simeon embodies kindness and builds others up, all while holding onto God's promise.
The Holy Spirit rests upon Simeon, which was a significant blessing at that time. He speaks the word of God and helps others see God's hand in their lives. Waiting for the consolation of Israel means helping others recognize God's presence and knowing that God will ultimately fix everything.
God's promise to send a Savior dates back to the Garden of Eden. Even after thousands of years, Simeon holds onto the promise that God has not abandoned His people, despite their suffering under Roman occupation and the prevalence of idol worship. God had given Simeon an additional promise: he would see the Messiah before he died.
As Simeon goes about his life, he encounters Anna, a widow who has dedicated her life to prayer and fasting in the temple. Anna lost her husband seven years after their marriage and has lived alone for many years. Her faith in God sustains her, and she represents those who rely solely on God for support.
Simeon and Anna's stories resonate with us today. We, too, are believers holding onto God's promises while living in a world filled with pain and suffering. We witness tragic events, such as plane crashes and terrorist attacks, and we experience personal struggles, including illness and loss. These realities remind us of our need for God and the hope He provides.
God keeps His promises, and that is why we have hope. We are not merely wishing for good things; we have a living God who has fulfilled every promise thus far. Simeon experiences the fulfillment of God's promise when he holds baby Jesus in his arms, proclaiming that he has seen the salvation prepared for all people.
Anna, who has spent her life in prayer, praises God and shares the good news of the Messiah with others. Both Simeon and Anna recognize that God keeps His promises, and their faith is rewarded. Simeon feels complete and ready to depart in peace, having witnessed the fulfillment of God's promise.
In our lives, we also see glimpses of God's goodness. Every baptism is a moment of salvation, and every communion Sunday is an invitation to the table of Christ. These moments remind us that God is active in our lives, providing hope and comfort.
Mr. Rogers once said that when he was young, his mother advised him to look for the helpers in times of trouble. This advice holds true today. We should look for the people God places in our lives to help us, especially during difficult times. We are never truly alone; God sends helpers to support us.
As we navigate life's challenges, we can also be helpers to others. We can remind those around us that hope is not lost and that God has not abandoned His people. Our actions can reflect God's love and support.
As we wait for the fullness of God's consolation, we must live righteously and cling to His promises. We should not be surprised when God uses us to shine His light in the lives of others. Enjoy the glimpses of peace and joy that God provides, and never lose hope in the promise of His ultimate fulfillment.
One day, we will stand before the Lord, and all suffering will be a distant memory. Until then, let us live in hope, knowing that God keeps His promises and that we are called to be His helpers in this world. Amen.
