Laura shares her heartfelt journey from growing up in a Vietnamese Buddhist household to converting to Catholicism amidst personal struggles, depression, and family hardships. Through encounters with Jesus Christ, the Catholic Church, and moments of spiritual revelation, she found healing, faith, and a renewed purpose to glorify God despite ongoing challenges.
Laura, a 27-year-old woman, shares her deeply personal and transformative journey from being raised in a Vietnamese Buddhist household to becoming a devout Catholic. Her story is one of struggle, faith, despair, and ultimately, hope and renewal through Jesus Christ.
Growing up, Laura was immersed in a devout Vietnamese Buddhist environment. Her mother was especially devoted, and Laura participated actively by visiting temples, giving offerings, and even staying overnight with Buddhist nuns who trained her in their practices. She considered becoming a Buddhist nun herself, contemplating shaving her head and adopting a vegetarian lifestyle, believing that enlightenment and salvation were attainable through Buddhism.
Despite this spiritual background, Laura's early life was happy. She had a loving family with both parents and an older brother. However, she was unaware of God or Christianity and had no interest in learning about them. She heard about Jesus Christ and church from classmates and others but remained a blank slate regarding Christianity.
During the 2007-2008 recession, Laura's family faced severe hardships. Her father lost his job, and the resulting stress deeply affected her family dynamics. Her parents' relationship deteriorated, leading to emotional distance and conflict. Laura experienced rejection and abandonment from her parents, was often pushed out of the house, and faced police interventions and psychiatric hospitalizations.
These experiences plunged her into darkness and despair. She felt utterly alone, abandoned, and hopeless. Despite seeking help through psychotherapy and medication, she found these insufficient for long-term healing. Her mental health struggles included severe depression, suicidal thoughts, panic attacks, and intrusive, distressing thoughts.
In high school, while living with another family, Laura reached out to her Catholic cousin to attend church with him. She visited a Vietnamese Catholic church and was struck by the large statue of Jesus Christ crucified. Although initially frightened by the imagery, she was curious and asked many questions about the church's practices.
Her cousin introduced her to the practice of Eucharistic adoration, where the Eucharist is displayed for prayer. Laura earnestly prayed, asking God for help amidst her family's turmoil and her own struggles. This marked the beginning of her openness to Christianity.
During a confirmation class event, Laura experienced a profound moment when receiving the Eucharist. Witnessing others falling under the Holy Spirit's influence, she too fell unexpectedly and was overcome with emotion and tears. This supernatural encounter deeply intrigued her and drew her closer to God.
She continued attending Mass and adoration, exploring the charismatic and mystical aspects of the Catholic faith. Despite this, she was not yet ready to convert, still battling depression, medication reliance, and risky behaviors.
A pivotal moment came during a retreat with a Buddhist nun who offered to initiate Laura into a formal Buddhist ritual. However, Laura felt a strong conviction that Buddhism was no longer her path and that she belonged with God.
In late 2017, Laura began the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) at a small Chinese Catholic community. Although the instruction was informal and limited, she faithfully attended. During this period, she endured terrifying nightmares and intrusive negative thoughts but persevered through prayer and support from a fellow convert.
On Easter Vigil 2018, Laura was baptized, confirmed, and received the Eucharist, officially becoming Catholic. This milestone brought immense relief and a reduction in her dark thoughts and nightmares.
Despite her conversion, Laura's struggles did not end. She continued to battle depression and feelings of isolation, especially within the church community, where she sometimes felt unwelcome due to her unique perspective and experiences.
She wrestled with her faith, questioning what God wanted from her and feeling unworthy despite God's promises and love. Relationships remained difficult, and she faced societal judgments about her life circumstances, such as unemployment and living with her mother.
Laura found inspiration in the television series "The Chosen," which helped her meditate on the life of Jesus and deepen her faith. She realized that her life was not about her own achievements but about glorifying God through her gifts, including art and speaking.
She embraced her identity as a new creation in Christ, committed to sharing the good news and living for God's glory. Laura acknowledges ongoing struggles but remains steadfast in her faith, continually converted by God's love.
Laura's journey from Buddhism to Catholicism is a testament to the transformative power of faith amidst adversity. Her story highlights the reality of spiritual and emotional battles, the importance of openness to God's presence, and the hope found in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
She encourages others, regardless of their background or beliefs, to seek God and find their own path to healing and purpose. Laura's testimony is a powerful reminder that no matter how broken or lost one may feel, God's love is always present and capable of renewal.
Glory be to God, King of the universe. Peace be with you. God love you. God bless you.
