Kesha D Hollis shares her journey of staying motivated while unemployed by engaging in gig work like DoorDash and Instacart, alongside her digital income ventures including a reselling fashion business and a photo booth business. She balances job hunting with active income generation, highlighting the realities and strategies of managing bills and rent without a traditional job.
My name is Kesha D Hollis, and I want to share my story of how I stay motivated and financially afloat while currently unemployed. Instead of waiting around for a job callback, I decided to take control of my income by exploring gig economy opportunities and digital income streams.
Rent and bills don’t wait, so neither do I. I started testing how much money I could make by doing DoorDash and Instacart. These platforms allow me to earn money on my own schedule, which is crucial while I continue my job search.
In my area, DoorDash and Uber Eats are popular, but Uber Eats requires a background check which I’m still waiting on. Instacart is more active about 10 miles away, but I try to minimize driving distance to save on gas and time. Depending on the demand and location, I switch between these platforms to maximize earnings.
Gig work is not without its challenges. For example, my husband started DoorDashing the same day I did, and unfortunately, he was hit from behind by a Tesla. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but it was a reminder of the risks involved. Despite this, we remain positive and focused on the income opportunities.
Recently, DoorDash added an extra 50 cents to each order, which is a welcome boost. However, I always remind myself that I chose this platform and must work within its terms. On some days, I rest due to health reasons like migraines, but I try to keep a consistent schedule.
While gig work helps with immediate cash flow, I’m also building digital income streams. I have a reselling fashion business and a 360 photo booth business with my husband. These ventures provide additional revenue and have the potential for growth.
I invest time in learning digital marketing through courses I purchased, which will help me expand my online income. I also recently launched a YouTube channel where I share insights about side hustles, digital income, and car conversations. This channel is part of my strategy to create multiple income streams.
I am actively looking for a traditional job, but I refuse to let the waiting period be unproductive. Instead of stressing over applications all day, I balance job hunting with gig work and digital business activities. This approach keeps me motivated and financially stable.
My goal is to work about four hours a day on DoorDash or Instacart, depending on demand and my schedule. I start my day with positive energy, often playing music to keep my spirits high. Managing expenses like gas is important; for instance, I aim to keep gas costs low to maximize profits.
Being unemployed doesn’t mean being unmotivated. By leveraging gig economy platforms like DoorDash and Instacart, alongside digital income ventures, I maintain financial stability and personal growth. This journey requires flexibility, resilience, and a proactive mindset. For anyone in a similar situation, remember that multiple income streams can provide security and open new opportunities.
