One promising approach is through tree breeding, which aims to enhance the growth and quality of Jati trees.
In this context, we explore the long-term journey of the Faculty of Forestry at Gadjah Mada University (UGM), which collaborates with various stakeholders to develop fast-growing Jati forests that yield high-quality wood. The Wanagama Education Forest, a special forest area dedicated to education and training in forestry, serves as a research station focusing on Jati cultivation.
Jati is chosen as a primary focus due to its superior qualities. The research at Wanagama aims to develop elite Jati trees through a breeding program initiated in collaboration with Perum Perhutani. In 1997, a significant step was taken when four researchers were sent to Thailand to learn about grafting and vegetative propagation techniques. Upon their return, they identified 140 superior Jati trees in Java, which became the genetic basis for developing high-quality Jati clones.
The breeding process involves selecting superior trees based on genetic factors rather than environmental conditions. To validate these selections, progeny tests are conducted. The research team continues to search for additional superior trees to complement the initial 140.
The clonal Jati trees, developed through the breeding program, are cultivated in a nursery known as Kebun Pangkas. This nursery is crucial for producing cuttings for widespread planting. The process begins with pruning the Jati trees to encourage new shoots, which are then treated to reduce evaporation and promote healthy growth.
To ensure the quality of the cuttings, regular watering is essential, especially during the dry season. The cuttings are treated with rooting hormones and placed in a controlled environment for about a month until roots and new shoots develop. Once established, these cuttings are transplanted into open areas for further growth.
The research team has developed standard operating procedures for silvicultural practices, including optimal planting distances and maintenance techniques. Thinning practices have shown significant benefits, with studies indicating that trees subjected to thinning grow larger in diameter compared to those that are not thinned.
In Gunung Kidul, where the soil is rocky and high in limestone, the superior Jati clones have demonstrated remarkable adaptability and growth rates, achieving over 4 cm in diameter growth per year. Comparisons between different propagation methods reveal that clonal propagation yields better growth and quality than traditional seed propagation.
Recent studies have compared the quality of wood from clonal Jati trees with conventional Jati harvested after 60 years. Although the clonal Jati trees are only 20 years old, they have already shown promising properties, entering strength classes 2 and 3. The research indicates that with proper management, the growth and quality of clonal Jati can be optimized.
Looking ahead, the potential for clonal Jati trees is significant. With continued research and development, it is anticipated that within the next 5 to 10 years, the quality and quantity of Jati wood will improve substantially. Clonal Jati represents a new hope for the future of the wood industry, offering a sustainable solution to meet global wood demands.
