In a significant development announced during this year's Union Budget, the Jal Jeevan Mission has been extended until 2028. This extension comes with an enhanced budget allocation of 67,000 crores, reflecting the government's commitment to improving water supply in rural areas.
Launched in 2019, the Jal Jeevan Mission aims to provide every rural household with 55 liters of water per person per day through functional household tap connections. Initially set for completion by 2024, the deadline has now been extended by three more years to ensure full coverage across the country.
Since its launch, the mission has made remarkable progress. Approximately 15 crore households, representing 80% of India's rural population, have gained access to portable tap water connections. Notably, several states and three Union Territories have achieved 100% coverage under this mission, showcasing the effectiveness of the initiative.
As the mission moves forward, the focus will shift towards maintaining infrastructure, ensuring sustainability, and improving operations. This will be achieved through community participation and collaboration with local governments.
To further enhance the mission's impact, separate Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed with states and Union Territories. These agreements will aim to ensure sustainability and promote a citizen-centric approach to water service delivery.
The announcement of the extension of the Jal Jeevan Mission comes at a crucial time, as the scheme was nearing its original end date.
