In this reflective blog post, David shares his personal experiences and insights gained over the past year since his baptism into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He discusses his spiritual growth, community involvement, health improvements, and the challenges of adapting to a new faith while maintaining connections to his Protestant roots.
One year ago, I was baptized and became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This past year has been filled with questions about what has changed in my life and how my journey on this new covenant path has unfolded. In this post, I will share my personal experiences and reflections from the past year.
Currently, I am at the Chicago Illinois temple, where I will be performing proxy baptisms for my ancestors, including my grandfather whom I never met. This experience is deeply meaningful to me, especially after learning about my family history during a visit to the Family Search headquarters in Salt Lake City. I discovered that my great-grandfather had a son who was never recorded on the census, which has made this journey of connecting with my ancestors even more poignant.
Reflecting on the past year, I liken my growth to the new trees around me. Just as they are still developing, I feel like a new student navigating a high school filled with unfamiliar experiences. I have visited various significant sites, including the Sacred Grove, Hill Cumorah, and the Kirtland Temple, each contributing to my understanding and appreciation of my faith.
Throughout the year, I have been learning to adapt to my new faith. I have participated in my local ward regularly, attending about three times every four Sundays. This approach has helped me avoid burnout while still engaging with my community. I have also begun to break out of my introverted shell, speaking during fast and testimony meetings and sharing my experiences with others.
As I walk the same path I took on the morning of my baptism, I reflect on the significance of that day. It was a moment filled with anticipation and spiritual awakening. Over the past year, I have experienced a deepening of my spiritual roots, moving beyond a solely biblical focus to include the Book of Mormon, teachings from prophets, and the community of church members.
One of the most notable changes in my life has been my health. Since removing alcohol and coffee from my diet, I feel healthier than ever. I used to enjoy craft beer regularly, but now I wake up early, feel energized, and maintain a consistent gym routine. This physical transformation has been a significant aspect of my journey.
The support I have received from church members has been overwhelming. I was initially unsure how to navigate my interfaith channel after my conversion, but the community has embraced me. I participated in a fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, raising nearly $28,000, which has been a testament to the goodwill and generosity of people from various faith backgrounds.
Transitioning into the Latter-day Saint culture has also presented some challenges. I have noticed a shift in how I engage with others, especially regarding sports discussions, as many members are from Utah and focus on BYU sports rather than my Wisconsin teams. Additionally, the frequency of communion in my new church has been a refreshing change, providing a sense of consistency in worship.
Dating within the Latter-day Saint community has been an interesting experience. I have found that there are more opportunities for singles to connect, which contrasts with my previous experiences in Protestant churches. However, I have also faced challenges in disclosing my faith to potential partners, often feeling hesitant due to societal perceptions of the church.
Looking ahead, I am considering moving to Utah to immerse myself further in the Latter-day Saint community. I feel a sense of purpose is missing in my current life, and I believe this move could provide new opportunities for growth and connection. I am also preparing for my temple endowment, which is an exciting milestone in my spiritual journey.
As I reflect on this past year, I am grateful for the slow and steady growth I have experienced. My journey has been filled with challenges, but it has also brought immense joy and fulfillment. I look forward to continuing this path and embracing the opportunities that lie ahead. If you have any questions or thoughts, feel free to leave a comment below.
