Remembering Pope Francis: A Legacy of Heart and Humility

It has been confirmed that Pope Francis has passed away. In this moment of sorrow, we are called to pray for the repose of his soul. Two words encapsulate the essence of Pope Francis's pontificate: heart and humility.

A Humble Beginning

Reflecting on the election of Pope Francis in 2013, I recall watching the event unfold at the Catholic Answers office alongside my colleagues. What struck me was the almost forlorn demeanor with which Pope Francis addressed the crowds in St. Peter's Square. This was a stark contrast to the more joyful expressions of his predecessors, Pope St. John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. In that moment, it was clear that Pope Francis was acutely aware of the weight of the office bestowed upon him and the immense responsibility that lay ahead.

A Personal Encounter

A few months after his election, my wife Laura and I got married. During our honeymoon, we participated in a tradition known as "sposi novelli," where the pope greets newlywed couples at his Wednesday audience. Following the advice of a priest friend, we purchased a white papal zucchetto from Garibald, the Pope's official tailor, to offer in exchange for Pope Francis's zucchetto. In a light-hearted moment, Pope Francis jokingly said he would prefer Laura's bridal tiara instead. I blurted out, "You're the pope; you can have whatever you want!" Laura then hugged the pope, which caused a stir among the papal security. This encounter revealed to me that Pope Francis was a man who preferred to think with his heart.

Leading with Heart

Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis's approach led to many joyful and humorous moments, as well as instances that could have benefited from clearer communication. Nevertheless, there is something endearing about a leader who values heartfelt expression. His embrace of the marginalized and vulnerable demonstrated that he led not only with his own heart but also with the heart of Christ.

One of his most significant encyclicals, "Dilexit Nos," serves as a meditation on the Sacred Heart of Jesus, encapsulating his vision and mission as pope.

A Blessing to the Church

There is much more to be said about Pope Francis, and in the coming weeks, many will reflect on his impact. Despite my occasional disagreements with him, I firmly believe that Pope Francis has been a blessing to the Church in numerous ways, and he will be deeply missed.

As we move forward, it is crucial to pray for the bishops of the world, especially the cardinal electors, as they prepare to gather to elect a new pope. The Holy Spirit does not automatically select the next pope; rather, the Spirit grants the Cardinals the grace to guide their decision. Past scandals involving popes may have arisen from Cardinals resisting this grace. Therefore, we must pray that they resist the temptations of politics and petty interests, turning instead to prayer and seeking divine guidance in leading the Church.
