It is true that you cannot pray the Rosary without suffering some involuntary distractions. It will be difficult to recite a Hail Mary without your restless imagination stealing part of your attention. However, it is possible to pray without voluntary distractions.
To reduce distractions and fix your attention, you must use all kinds of means. Place yourself in the presence of God, thinking that He and His Most Holy Mother are watching you, that your guardian angel is on your right collecting your well-prayed Hail Marys as roses to weave a crown for Jesus and Mary. Conversely, the devil is on your left, prowling around to devour your Hail Marys said without attention, devotion, or modesty, and to record them in his book of death.
Never omit offering each decade in honor of the mysteries. Imagine in your mind the Lord and His Most Holy Mother in the mystery you are contemplating. There is no prayer more meritorious for the soul or more glorious for Jesus and Mary than the well-prayed Rosary. However, there is also nothing more difficult than praying it well and with persevering attention.

Before starting our prayer, natural apathy and negligence increase. During prayer, boredom, distractions, and weariness grow. And when we have finished praying amid a thousand labors and distractions, the devil depresses us in various ways and mocks us, saying: "You have done nothing worthwhile. Your Rosary is worthless. You waste time reciting so many vocal prayers without attention. Half an hour of meditation or a good reading would benefit you much more. Tomorrow, when you are less drowsy, you can pray with more attention. So leave the rest of your Rosary for tomorrow."

Do not believe the devil. Do not lose heart, because even if throughout the Rosary your imagination has been full of distractions and strange ideas, whenever you have tried to dismiss them as soon as you notice them, your Rosary will be much better because it is more difficult. And it is all the more meritorious the more difficult it is, the less pleasant it naturally is to be harassed by countless annoying mosquitoes and ants running here and there in your imagination.
But despite yourself, they do not allow the spirit to savor what it says and rest peacefully. If it is necessary to spend the entire Rosary fighting against distractions, fight valiantly with weapons in hand, that is, continue praying it, even without taste or sensible consolation. It will be a terrible battle but very healthy for the faithful soul.
If you surrender, that is, if you abandon the Rosary, you are defeated, and henceforth, the devil, triumphant over your willpower, will leave you in peace but will reproach your pusillanimity and infidelity on Judgment Day.
Take heart, then, good and faithful servant of Jesus Christ and the Most Holy Virgin, who have resolved to pray the Rosary every day. May the multitude of flies—so I call the distractions that annoy you while praying—never make you cowardly abandon the company of Jesus and Mary in which you find yourself when praying the Rosary.
To recite the Rosary well, after invoking the Holy Spirit, place yourself for a moment in the presence of God and offer the decades. Before starting each decade, pause for a moment—longer or shorter depending on the time you have—to consider the mystery you are about to contemplate in that decade, and ask for one of the virtues that stand out most in it or that you most need, through the intercession of the Most Holy Virgin.
