In the summer of 2025, we reflect on a significant chapter in the history of St. Marks, a congregation that has evolved remarkably over the past quarter-century. What began as a slow embrace of English has transformed into a vibrant tri-lingual parish, actively engaging with the Spanish-speaking community. This post delves into the origins and growth of Spanish language outreach at St. Marks, highlighting the key milestones and individuals who have contributed to this journey.
For decades, Spanish was a language heard occasionally in the vicinity of Watertown, particularly in the canning factory where migrants from Texas would work seasonally. However, the landscape began to change in the early 1990s as more individuals crossed the border from Mexico, choosing to stay year-round and work in local factories. This demographic shift prompted St. Marks to reconsider its outreach strategies.
During a planning process in the early 1990s, St. Marks recognized the need for a dedicated pastor who could not only lead the congregation but also focus on Spanish language outreach. In 1995, I accepted this call, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the parish. My journey began with learning Spanish in 1996, which laid the groundwork for our outreach efforts.
By 1997, we had initiated weekly Bible classes in our parish center, creating a space for Spanish-speaking families to gather and learn. The following year, in September 1998, we took a significant step by starting weekly services in Spanish within the sanctuary. This was a pivotal moment that allowed us to formally welcome Spanish-speaking members into our community.
By Mother's Day in the year 2000, our efforts bore fruit as we celebrated the confirmation of 15 adults and the participation of 15 children. This milestone was just the beginning; over the years, our Spanish language outreach has grown to include approximately 35 Spanish-speaking families, totaling around 130 individuals. This growth reflects the dedication of our congregation to embrace diversity and foster inclusivity.
