This blog post explores prophetic narrations regarding future attacks on Mecca, discussing historical precedents, the significance of these events, and the implications for the Muslim community.
In the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), there are strange events foretold for the future, which serve as a testament to his prophethood. Some of these events are deeply painful to contemplate, yet they must be believed as they are destined to occur. Among these is the repeated invasion of the beloved city of Mecca, which holds a special place in the hearts of Muslims.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated that the invasions of the Kaaba would not cease until a certain army is swallowed by the earth. This prophecy, narrated by Abu Huraira, indicates that these invasions are not from righteous Islamic armies but rather hostile forces aiming to destroy the Kaaba itself. The term "invasions" here refers specifically to attempts to conquer the sacred house, not to protect or honor it.
Historically, there have been rare incidents of such invasions. One notable event occurred during the time of the Khawarij in the year 130 AH, when they besieged Mecca and Medina for three months. However, their intent was not to destroy the Kaaba but to gain control over the Muslim community.
A more relevant historical incident is the attack by the Qarmatians in 317 AH, led by Abu Tahir al-Jannabi. They invaded Mecca on the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah, killing 1,700 pilgrims within the precincts of the Kaaba and stealing the Black Stone, which they took to Bahrain for 22 years. This event was a direct assault on the sanctity of the Kaaba and is the only instance that aligns closely with the prophetic warnings.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) foretold that an army would attempt to invade the Kaaba, and they would be swallowed by the earth in a place called Bidaya, located south of Medina. This event is significant as it indicates that the invasion will occur before major signs of the Day of Judgment, including the emergence of the Dajjal (the Antichrist).
During the time of the Dajjal, there will be attempts to invade Mecca and Medina. However, these attempts will be thwarted by divine intervention, as angels will protect these holy cities. Despite these failed attempts, a successful invasion is anticipated in the later days, particularly after the time of Jesus (peace be upon him).
Scholars suggest that a man named Dhul-Suwayqatayn will lead a successful attack on the Kaaba, destroying it stone by stone. This event is foreseen as part of the end times, when the righteous will have departed from the earth, leaving only the worst of humanity behind.
The prophecies regarding the future of the Kaaba serve several purposes:
The warnings about future invasions of Mecca remind us of the significance of the Kaaba in Islam and the trials that may come. While these events are foreboding, they also highlight the enduring nature of the Kaaba and the divine protection it receives. As believers, we must hold onto our faith and trust in Allah's plan, praying for the sanctity and safety of the holy sites. May Allah honor the Kaaba and grant us the opportunity to visit it in peace.
