Born in the late 1990s, around 1999 or 2000, Notch is believed to have originated from the Ridge Pride in the Masai Mara. He formed a coalition with another young lion named Light Male, and by 2004, their confidence had grown to the point where they dared to challenge the renowned Marsh Pride, made famous by the BBC's Big Cat Diaries TV show. In a daring confrontation, Notch and Light Male drove out the previous leaders, Simba and Blondie, establishing themselves as the new rulers of the Marsh Pride.
The Marsh Pride was known for its size and strength, boasting over 20 lions. In 2004, after a fierce battle, Notch and Light Male successfully defeated Simba, who was forced to flee. This victory marked the beginning of Notch's reign as a dominant force in the Masai Mara. However, the challenges were far from over.
In 2007, Notch faced a significant setback when he was outnumbered and forced to surrender the Marsh Pride. For two years, he and his sons were presumed dead, as they had not been seen in the Mara. During this time, Notch was actually preparing his sons for their eventual return. When he reappeared, leading his now-grown sons, they quickly reclaimed their territory, conquering 10 out of the 22 prides in the Masai Mara.
The Notch Coalition, consisting of Notch and his five sons, became a formidable force, ruling over several prides including Magoro, Rero, Paradise, and Maji Yasai. Their hunting prowess was well documented, even highlighted in the Disney film African Cats, which showcased their remarkable skills and teamwork.
With their dominance came a reign of terror in the Masai Mara. The Notch Coalition was responsible for numerous deaths among rival lions, solidifying their reputation as one of the most feared prides. However, their reign was not without challenges.
