Understanding Environment, Habitat, and Ecosystem: A Comprehensive Guide

Hello friends, welcome to the PMF IAS Environment video lecture series. My name is Rishabh, and I am excited to present this series based on the PMF IAS Environment booklet for 2024 and 2025. This is our third edition, and it is the latest available in the market. In this series, we will cover not only the environment booklet but also many additional topics, including current affairs relevant to prelims and mains perspectives.

Overview of the Series

This series aims to create interactive sessions, focusing on the significant orientation of environment and ecology. This first video will cover Chapter One of the PMF IAS Environment booklet, which discusses the environment, habitat, and ecosystem.

What is Environment?

The term "environment" is derived from the French word "environ," which means surroundings. It encompasses everything that surrounds us, including both biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) components. For example, sunlight, water, mountains, and human-made structures are all part of our environment.

Components of Environment

1. Biotic Components: These include all living things such as humans, animals, and plants. Biotic components can reproduce and have a life cycle.
2. Abiotic Components: These are non-living elements like air, water, soil, and climate. They play a crucial role in shaping the environment.

Physical, Biological, Chemical, and Cultural Components

• Physical Components: Tangible elements like mountains, rocks, and water.
• Biological Components: Living organisms, including humans, plants, and animals.
• Chemical Components: Nutrients and compounds like carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus that cycle through living organisms.
• Cultural Components: Man-made elements such as factories and plastic products.

Habitat and Ecosystem

What is Habitat?

A habitat is the natural environment in which an organism lives. It provides the necessary resources for survival, such as food, water, and shelter. Different species have different habitat preferences based on their needs.

What is Ecosystem?

An ecosystem is a structural and functional unit of nature where biotic and abiotic components interact. It includes all living organisms in a particular area, along with their physical environment, functioning together as a system.

Differences Between Habitat and Ecosystem

• Habitat: Refers to the specific area where an organism lives, which can be small or large. It is a subset of the environment.
• Ecosystem: Generally larger than a habitat and includes multiple habitats. It is defined by the interactions between living organisms and their environment.

Interrelationship Between Environment, Habitat, and Ecosystem

The environment encompasses both habitats and ecosystems. While habitats are specific areas that support life, ecosystems represent the broader interactions and relationships among various habitats and their inhabitants.

Importance of Current Affairs

In our series, we will also cover current affairs related to the environment, as they are crucial for understanding contemporary issues in ecology and environmental science. Articles from reputable sources like The Hindu, Indian Express, and PIB will be referenced to provide relevant information.
