Thank you for joining me today for Give Him 15. Yesterday's post focused on nations being given to Christ as His inheritance. Today, we will shift our focus to us as individuals and our role in this inheritance. We are loved by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Today's title is "Undistracted Devotion." As a football fan, I have a special fondness for the NFL, particularly the Denver Broncos. Several years ago, during a crucial playoff game, I found myself in a familiar scenario: my young daughter, Hannah, who was only three or four at the time, plopped down in my lap, eager to share her thoughts. While I was captivated by the game, I was also attempting to listen to her, albeit distractedly.
Hannah, perceptive as she was, quickly noticed my divided attention. She sternly instructed me to look her in the eye and listen. This moment of clarity highlighted the essence of undistracted devotion. In 1 Corinthians 7:35, Paul uses the phrase "undistracted devotion" to describe our commitment to the Lord. The Greek words used convey the idea of not allowing anything to pull us away from our devotion to Him.
The term "undistracted devotion" can be broken down into two parts. The first part, derived from the Greek word "perispastro," means not to let anything drag you away from something. The second part, from the root word "proas," suggests leaning toward someone or something with full attention. This imagery evokes the idea of being captivated by someone, much like sitting on the edge of our seats, fully engaged.
Hannah wanted my full attention, not the distraction of the television. In that moment, she was number one in my life, and I realized that God desires the same from us. He understands our busy lives but longs for some undistracted time with us. It is essential to set the right priorities and focus on what matters most.
If we find ourselves indifferent to God's presence, the first step is repentance. We should ask God to forgive our indifference and awaken a passion for His company. Spending quality time with Him will increase our hunger for His presence, making us look forward to those moments together.
King Solomon's prayer for an understanding heart in 1 Kings 3:9 exemplifies this desire for connection. The phrase "understanding heart" can also be translated as a "hearing heart." This concept emphasizes the importance of listening to God, which requires us to quiet our minds and souls.
In a world filled with distractions, hearing God can be challenging. The psalmist David spoke of quieting his soul, likening it to a weaned child resting against his mother. To hear God's voice, we must learn the art of silencing our thoughts and emotions. When we do this, we create space for God to speak to us.
A story illustrates this beautifully: a boy found a lost watch in an ice house by simply lying down and listening for its ticking. This anecdote reminds us that our hearts can hear when they are undistracted. God speaks to those who will listen, and we must slow down to let Him into our lives.
As we conclude, let us reflect on our relationship with God. He desires our undivided attention and devotion. We should repent for any indifference and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us in prioritizing our time with Him. By choosing to look into His eyes and listen, we can experience the joy of undistracted devotion.
