Vision Sunday serves as a reflection on the achievements of 2024 and a planning session for 2025, emphasizing the importance of faithfulness in service and the call to action for the church community.
Good morning, church! Today marks one of my favorite Sundays of the year—Vision Sunday. This tradition began about five years ago, where we take time to reflect on what God has accomplished in the past year and to look forward to what He has in store for us in the coming year. We will celebrate our achievements and pray about our plans for 2025.
Vision Sunday is not just a routine; it is a moment for us to wrestle with God about our mission and purpose. We will have two sermons today: one grounded in Scripture and another focused on our church's journey and future.
We begin with a passage from Luke 19:10, where Jesus states, "For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost." This verse encapsulates our mission as a church—to become more like Jesus and to seek out those who are lost. As we navigate through the Gospel of Luke, we see that the chapters and verses were added later for our convenience, but the message remains clear: we are called to connect the dots of faith and action.
As we delve deeper into Luke 19, we find Jesus telling a parable about a nobleman who goes to a distant country to be appointed king. This parable serves as a metaphor for Jesus' own journey to the cross and His eventual return. The nobleman gives ten servants a mina each, instructing them to put the money to work until his return. This story is crucial as it prepares us for the time in between Jesus' ascension and His eventual return.
The parable challenges us to consider whether we truly want Jesus to be our king. If we accept Him as king, we must acknowledge that He is in charge of our lives. The nobleman’s return signifies a moment of accountability, where he asks his servants what they have done with the resources entrusted to them.
This parable illustrates that the reward for faithful service is increased responsibility. It raises the question: What does God want us to do with the resources He has given us?
As we reflect on the past year, it is essential to recognize the milestones we have achieved as a church community. We initiated a campaign called Relentless Pursuit, which aimed to raise funds for outreach, debt reduction, and capital expenses. Here are some highlights from 2024:
