Join us on a 1,200-mile road trip to Reading, Pennsylvania, for North America's largest World War II airshow held on the anniversary of D-Day. From preparing our van and picking up friends to witnessing vintage aircraft, warbird flights, and patriotic ceremonies, this comprehensive account captures the excitement, history, and camaraderie of this unforgettable WWII gathering.
In this adventure, five of my friends and I embarked on a 1,200-mile journey to attend North America's largest World War II gathering in Reading, Pennsylvania. The event was held on the anniversary of D-Day, making it a significant and memorable occasion. Join us as we recount the entire experience from start to finish.
The mission began with George and me picking up a 12-passenger van. We wanted to ensure there was plenty of room for everyone to be comfortable during our 19-hour road trip. After inspecting the van and confirming authorized drivers, I removed the rear seat to create ample cargo space for all my camera gear.
Once the van was ready, we started picking up the crew. First, we picked up David, who served in the Army Reserve for several years. Then we picked up Ron, and finally, the two Bobs, affectionately known as the Bob twins. The group was lively and excited for the adventure ahead.
As we hit the road, the journey was filled with moments both challenging and beautiful. About halfway through Missouri, we witnessed a semi-truck crash, a sobering reminder of the risks on the road. Driving through the night, I took the early morning shift. When we crested a hill in Ohio, the sunrise was spectacular, prompting us to stop at a rest area to appreciate the history and beauty of Ohio.
Crossing into Pennsylvania, we drove through the Blue Mountains and navigated interesting tunnels, adding to the adventure.
Before heading to the airshow, George took us to the Bethlehem Diner for breakfast. It was a great way to fuel up and soak in some local atmosphere. We also met some friendly locals, including Nathan, who was selling programs for the event.
Finally, we arrived at the airshow, and the excitement was palpable. The event featured a variety of vintage aircraft, including the C-54 Sky Master, the same model of aircraft featured at the Bill Demsay farm. The sound of these vintage planes and the smell of their exhaust evoked a strong sense of nostalgia.
The crowd was a mix of aviation enthusiasts, veterans, and families, all gathered under the waving American flag in a brisk breeze. One of the most memorable moments was witnessing the top brass arrive in the C-54 and line up for the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner.
One of the weekend's highlights was getting my friend Dave a ride in a Steerman biplane, a perfect warbird for the occasion. Thanks to David Brown of Steerman Biplane Rides and Warbird Flights, Dave had an amazing experience that we were fortunate to capture on camera.
