Dave Eggers told OpenAI that ChatGPT could deprive students of their writing voices. A national teen survey and a small essay-writing preprint identify real risks without proving generational harm, while schools and unions are already adopting a broader mix of AI products and training.
Dave Eggers brought a stark claim into OpenAI's offices: when students outsource composition, they do not merely submit weaker work; they surrender the practice through which a voice develops. The available evidence makes that risk plausible, not proven. Meanwhile, the institutional rollout is moving faster than the research needed to distinguish tutoring from substitution.
Sam Altman invited Eggers to speak to about 200 OpenAI employees in 2025 after the author dismissed a ChatGPT-generated short story that had impressed the company's chief as “pastiche nonsense,” according to the interview that first detailed the meeting.
Eggers told the employees that ChatGPT had made teachers' work vastly harder and that machine composition could take away students' ability to tell their own stories.
“If students are using it to compose, which is the biggest tragedy of all, they’ll never learn to write.”
The remarks drew renewed attention in July 2026 through a brief account that attributed the quotation to that earlier interview. That chain matters: the later item did not independently report what happened in the room.
The meeting itself complicates the image of a purely hostile confrontation. Eggers later called it an interesting, open conversation and distinguished rank-and-file employees from senior leaders. He also said he and his wife, the writer Vendela Vida, were involved in two class actions accusing Anthropic of using their books without authorization to train language models. His objections therefore concern both the material used to build AI systems and the work people hand over to them.
An exchange at OpenAI sharpened the second concern. An employee said he had used ChatGPT to write a poem honoring his hometown because he wanted feedback. Eggers urged him to find a writing group and seek encouragement from people. For Eggers, the threatened resource is not only the finished sentence; it is the human process of developing judgment.

Eggers' “generation” language compresses several kinds of use into one. A survey of 1,458 U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 who live with a parent, conducted online from September 25 to October 9, 2025, found that 54% had used chatbots for schoolwork. The overall margin of error was plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
Ten percent of all respondents said they did all or most of their schoolwork with chatbot help. Twenty-one percent said some, 23% a little and 45% none. Research and math help were more common uses than editing, though 35% of teens said they had used chatbots to edit something they wrote.
Those categories do not reveal whether a student requested an explanation, revised a sentence or submitted generated prose. Nor does the survey establish the prevalence of cheating. It found that 59% of teens believed students at their school used AI to cheat at least somewhat often, while 15% were unsure. That is evidence of a perceived school problem, not a count of verified incidents.
The experimental evidence is more direct but far smaller. A revised 2025 preprint on AI-assisted essay writing divided participants among LLM, search-engine and no-tools conditions. Fifty-four people completed the first three sessions; 18 completed a fourth crossover session. The researchers reported that self-reported essay ownership was lowest in the LLM group and highest in the no-tools group, and that LLM users struggled to quote their own writing accurately.
That result supports Eggers' concern about ownership in a particular writing task. It does not measure long-term writing development among representative schoolchildren, compare the full range of classroom uses or demonstrate that ChatGPT inevitably makes a student voiceless.

OpenAI is not withdrawing from education. It is trying to separate answer generation from guided learning while putting its tools into teachers' workflows.
In July 2025, the company introduced study mode, which uses questions, hints, reflection prompts and knowledge checks rather than immediately giving an answer. OpenAI said it built the behavior with teachers, scientists and pedagogy experts, primarily with college students in mind.
The safeguard has important limits acknowledged by the company. Users can switch it off during a conversation. It was initially implemented through custom system instructions, which OpenAI said could produce inconsistent behavior and mistakes, and the company said longer-term research on learning outcomes was still under way.
In November 2025, OpenAI launched a separate workspace for verified U.S. K-12 educators, free through June 2027. The company says information shared there is not used to train its models by default and that school leaders receive domain and role-based controls. It also says pricing may change after the free period. The workspace is teacher-facing; it does not resolve what students should be allowed to delegate.
The distribution effort is not OpenAI's alone. An account of the American Federation of Teachers initiative reported these commitments:

The reported package therefore combines $21 million in funding with $2 million in OpenAI technical resources. The AFT aims to train 400,000 teachers over five years—about one in ten of the roughly 4 million U.S. teachers cited in the same account.
That scale gives the companies an opportunity to introduce their products in schools, but the governance is not simply corporate. AFT President Randi Weingarten said the union approached the companies because schools lacked comparable resources. Educators are to design and lead the training, use tools from multiple vendors and retain the training's intellectual property. A workshop described in the account included ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Khanmigo and Colorín Colorado.
Eggers has spent more than two decades building the substitute he recommends. He co-founded the youth writing center 826 Valencia in 2002. His newer Art + Water project plans to provide free studio space to 10 established artists in return for teaching and mentoring 20 emerging artists, with no tuition for participants.
Those programs lower the price of human feedback rather than automate it. Eggers' own practice follows the same logic: he drafts by hand, transfers his work to a computer from 1998 that has never been online and writes on a boat to escape digital distraction.
But his strongest classroom claims remain personal judgments. In an interview, he said AI added 20 hours a week to every U.S. public-school teacher's workload and prescribed no AI in humanities writing for people under 22. He also said teachers of his children were increasingly requiring supervised handwritten essays and that those students became more effective writers. The source offers no workload measurement or controlled comparison supporting those claims.
His institutions nevertheless expose a real policy choice. Schools can spend on human attention, AI tools or some combination. Free access does not erase that tradeoff; it moves part of the near-term cost to unions and technology companies while leaving later pricing, staff time and instructional effects unsettled.
The immediate decision is not whether all AI use equals authorship loss. Schools need to define which steps students must perform themselves and which kinds of assistance are compatible with the purpose of an assignment. Brainstorming, explanation, editing and wholesale composition should not be treated as interchangeable.
They also need evidence matched to those rules. Useful studies would follow representative students over time, compare clearly defined modes of AI assistance and measure unaided writing, recall and transfer to new tasks. Workload studies should count time saved on planning as well as time spent redesigning assignments, checking authorship and handling disputes.
Procurement decisions require another set of disclosures: who controls student and teacher data, whether learning-oriented settings can be disabled, which products training programs expose educators to and what access costs after free periods end.
Eggers' speech made the loss of voice the central danger. The current record cannot show that an entire generation is being silenced. It does show that students are already using chatbots, many perceive frequent misuse, a small experiment found weaker ownership under LLM assistance, and institutions are introducing several vendors before long-term effects are known. The next defensible step is to turn those competing claims into policies and measurements that can fail a test—not slogans that cannot.
