Yang Qi Says Black Myth: Zhong Kui’s Design and Asset Work Will Avoid Generative AI
Yang Qi, Game Science’s co-founder and Black Myth art director, says the team will keep AI-generated content out of Black Myth: Zhong Kui’s design and asset-production stages. The Weibo response is a limited production choice for an early project, not a disclosed company-wide AI ban or a release-date update.
- Yang Qi says Black Myth: Zhong Kui will avoid AI-generated content in its design and asset-production stages.
- Qi’s answer does not announce a blanket Game Science ban on AI or a new release timetable.
- The next Black Myth game is still early in development, with a new protagonist and no release date.
Yang Qi, the co-founder of Game Science and art director of the studio’s Black Myth series, says the team will keep AI-generated content out of the design and asset-production stages of Black Myth: Zhong Kui. Qi made the comment in a reply to a Weibo user who asked whether current AI could speed the game’s development, as the original report recounts.
The scope is the news. Game Science is the Chinese studio behind the 2024 Black Myth: Wukong and has now announced Zhong Kui as its second Black Myth title. But Qi’s response addresses two parts of its production pipeline. It neither specifies other uses of AI nor commits the company to a permanent or studio-wide prohibition.

A limited answer to a question about speed
Qi said the team would stay away from AIGC—Chinese shorthand for AI-generated content—in design and asset work. He framed that choice not as opposition to AI but as an effort to remain with the team’s established way of working, according to a separate account of the exchange.
His wider point was patience: “no rush.” The comments followed Qi’s praise for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and its use of older filmmaking techniques. That analogy explains the preference he expressed; it does not establish that generative AI would make the game worse, faster or slower.
The distinction matters because reports are describing an early production, not a late change to a finished game. So far, the studio has shown a CG teaser and a Chinese New Year video without gameplay or story details. says no release date has been set.
