Jacob Tsimerman, a 38-year-old University of Toronto mathematics professor whose work helped solve the André-Oort conjecture, says he will begin working for OpenAI in late August. The newly named Fields Medalist has moved his research focus from number theory toward AI safety, a report based on his account says. The reporting does not specify his OpenAI role.
That move matters because Tsimerman’s credentials come from exactly the kind of human mathematical judgment that current AI systems are beginning to challenge. The Fields Medal is a four-year prize for accomplished mathematicians who are under 40 in the award year. Tsimerman’s record includes a difficult special case of André-Oort in his dissertation, the 2021 proof of the full conjecture with Jonathan Pila and Ananth Shankar, and later work in Hodge theory, the account of his career explains.
He has drawn a severe conclusion from the recent progress: “I think AI will be better than mathematicians at doing math within two years,” Tsimerman said. He has stopped taking graduate students because he worries about sending them into a conventional research career that may not persist, and says mathematicians could help analyze systems of AI agents and derive proofs that they will not act in unintended ways. Those are his assessments and choices, not a consensus prediction for the profession.

The evidence behind the urgency is real but limited
OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has supplied one important reason that Tsimerman’s view cannot be dismissed as distant speculation. In May, the company said disproved a long-standing conjecture about the planar unit-distance problem. OpenAI said the model was tested on a collection of Erdős problems rather than trained specifically for mathematics or directed at this particular question, and that external mathematicians checked the proof.
