Open Design has attracted nearly 80,000 GitHub stars with an open, model-flexible answer to Claude Design, but its million-install claim has no published methodology and the team has not disclosed the retention and revenue figures needed to judge the business.
Open Design has built remarkable attention around an Apache-licensed workspace that turns coding agents into design tools. What it has not yet established is the more consequential claim behind the attention: that a large, retained user base is forming around the free software or that its paid convenience layers amount to a durable business.
Tom Huang, presented in a July 16 interview as Open Design's builder, said the project had passed 77,000 GitHub stars and 1 million installs. The publication's receipt check verified the public repository and star count. It explicitly classified the install total as a figure supplied by Huang and not independently audited.
The distinction matters because the two numbers do not share a denominator. Open Design has not published whether an “install” is a download, completed setup, package-manager event, update, distinct device or distinct person. Repeat installations and upgrades could therefore affect the total, but the archived sources do not say how.
Huang declined to disclose weekly active users or cloud registrations. He said the largest drop-off occurs between installation and weekly use. That is the closest the team comes to describing retention, and it limits the million-install figure more than the headline expands it.
GitHub activity is easier to check. The July 19 repository snapshot displayed 79,600 stars, 9,200 forks, 438 contributors and 19 releases. A May 17 report had recorded more than 40,000 stars in about two weeks. The public star count was therefore roughly twice its mid-May level two months later.
That growth is evidence of awareness. Forks and contributors also show that some of the audience moved into development. None of those measures reveals distinct installations, completed design work, repeat use or paying customers. Calling the relationship between stars and installs a conversion funnel would assign a precision the underlying measures do not have.

The interview describes a Shanghai team that stopped work on an instant-messaging product after Anthropic launched Claude Design on April 17. Open Design went public on April 28. Huang said the unnamed chief executive built the initial 18,700-line release in two days, spent another 24 hours debugging it and incurred roughly $200 for a coding-agent subscription.
The archived pages associate the project with nexu-io, which the June analysis describes as a studio. The interviewer describes Huang as a founder who previously worked on ByteDance agent platforms including Coze and Aily, but does not identify him as the chief executive. None of the retained material names a legal company entity.
The build figures are team-supplied, as are Huang's claims that agents write virtually all of the code and that version 0.9.0 combined 310 pull requests from 88 contributors in seven days. They illustrate the operating method the team presents—humans define contracts and validation while agents implement—but they are not an independently measured productivity comparison. The evidence does not show what work preceded the two-day build, how the lines were counted or how much human review followed.
The architecture does create a real cost distinction. Open Design does not supply a model for its local and bring-your-own-key paths. The user connects a coding-agent plan or model endpoint, so the associated inference bill sits with the user or that provider rather than with Open Design. The core can be distributed free without the maintainer funding every generation, but “free” software does not mean cost-free use.
Commercial services now sit above that base. The repository promotes Open Design Cloud as a managed router billed by token usage. Huang also said the team is testing a hosted workspace for shared brand assets, drafts and comments, and claimed it had reached “stable positive cash flow.” He disclosed no revenue, customer count, operating cost or measurement period. The retained sources also identify no outside financing, leaving no basis to judge the financial significance of that claim.

Open Design's most defensible distinction is control over the software and execution layer. Its Apache-2.0 code can be forked; its skills and DESIGN.md systems are files; and the current repository says it can connect to 25 distinct local coding-agent executables as well as compatible model endpoints. Artifacts remain ordinary project files.
That does not make every advertised capability unique. Anthropic's April 17 launch announcement says Claude Design can save a project as a folder and export to Canva, PDF, PPTX or standalone HTML. It can build a design system from a team's codebase and design files, support inline comments and direct edits, and provide organization-scoped viewing and collaborative editing. Anthropic launched it as a research preview for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise subscribers using Claude Opus 4.7.
The practical comparison is therefore more specific:

Open Design also builds on earlier work. Its own lineage section calls OpenCoworkAI's Open Codesign the first open-source Claude Design alternative, credits Multica for the local-daemon and adapter architecture, and traces the original nine-section DESIGN.md schema to VoltAgent's Awesome Design MD. HyperFrames, its motion-graphics layer, comes from HeyGen. The project has assembled those components into a broad workspace; it did not originate all of the underlying patterns.
A June competitive analysis placed the product between chat-generated artifacts and cloud application builders such as Lovable, Bolt and v0. In that framing, Open Design offers more portability and design emphasis than a chat canvas but less full-stack application generation than those builders. Figma remains a deeper collaborative design environment. This narrows the likely customer: teams comfortable with repositories, coding agents and file-based design systems, rather than every user who needs a visual canvas.

Open Design's product FAQ says the daemon and artifacts stay on the user's machine, while prompts and skill context go to the model provider chosen by the user. That is local control of files and orchestration, not necessarily local inference.
The retained company pages also conflict on Open Design's own network role. The FAQ says the project has no server of its own. The newer repository advertises Open Design Cloud and says product analytics and session replay require consent while scrubbed safety and reliability telemetry is always on. The repository snapshot is the stronger evidence of the current product because it documents the cloud service and telemetry behavior directly. Absolute claims of offline operation or zero project telemetry do not survive that update.
Users still gain meaningful choices: they can select the model provider, use a local CLI, keep artifacts in a repository and inspect or fork the application. But prompt privacy follows the selected provider, and a local desktop shell does not by itself establish that all data remains on the device.
Supporting 25 local executables is both a distribution strategy and a compatibility obligation. Each upstream CLI can change configuration, authentication or stream formats. A shared adapter contract may reduce the work required to add a runtime; it does not eliminate the continuing work of keeping all of them functional.
The early release history offers one concrete warning, not a general verdict. The May 17 report said version 0.4.0 contained a packaging error that made the bundled daemon crash on its first import and was immediately replaced by version 0.4.1. It also reported an unsigned Windows installer and said the codebase had not been independently audited at that time.
By the July snapshot, the project's own roadmap still marked reliable comment-mode edits as incomplete, the AI-generated tweaks interface as unimplemented, migration plugins as alpha and the existing-codebase refresh plugin as unfinished. Those gaps are especially relevant because targeted refinement, migration and work on existing repositories are part of the case for using Open Design instead of a one-shot generator.
Open Design's public repository metrics already show that an open, model-flexible response to Claude Design can attract attention and contributors quickly. Its stronger adoption and business claims now face a different threshold: auditable measures of use and economics.
That would require a definition of an installation; distinct devices or people over a stated period; weekly activity measured on the same population; and retention cohorts after first use. A product comparison would also need repeated, task-based tests against Claude Design, full-stack builders and established design tools—not feature counts drawn from each vendor's own documentation.
The commercial layer needs equally basic evidence: paying cloud and workspace customers, token-routing volume, recurring revenue, infrastructure and support costs, and gross profit over a defined period. Until those numbers exist, nearly 80,000 stars are a strong distribution signal and 1 million installs remain a team-supplied claim. Neither establishes habitual use or a self-sustaining business.
