In today's blog post, we take you on a journey to the stunning Hunter Valley wine region, located just a two-hour drive from Sydney. Known for its picturesque landscapes and exceptional wines, Hunter Valley is one of Australia's most renowned wine regions, producing over 3% of the country's wine and home to more than 150 wineries.
The drive from Sydney to Hunter Valley is scenic and can easily be done in a day. However, we chose to stay overnight to fully immerse ourselves in the experience. On our way, we made a stop at Ample's Petrol Station, where we enjoyed some delicious food to fuel our adventure.
Our adventure began at Ivanho Wines, an 80-acre vineyard in Cokebin, managed by a fifth-generation member of the renowned Drton family. This boutique winery is steeped in history and has been recognized as one of the top boutique wineries in Hunter Valley by Australian magazines.
What makes Ivanho unique is that their wines are not sold in bottle shops; instead, you can pre-order them online or pick them up at the cellar door. They even offer engraved bottles for a personalized touch. The tasting room provides breathtaking views of the Broken Back Range, often considered some of the best in the region. In fact, this stunning view has graced the cover of Australian Traveler magazine.
Next, we visited De Bortoli Winery, a name we frequently encountered at various events. Upon arrival, we discovered a local market featuring handmade products from local artisans. De Bortoli is rich in history, and their cellar door offers an extensive selection of wines. They also host fun events like sip and paint, making it a must-visit for those looking for a unique experience.
Our next destination was the Hunter Valley Gardens, a breathtaking 14-hectare space featuring 40 themed landscapes and an 8 km walking path. However, upon arriving, we felt that the entry price was not worth it, especially since we had already visited Mayfield Gardens and other similar attractions. Nevertheless, the area in front of the gardens was free to explore and offered stunning views.
For tourists without a car, hiring a service to explore the region is a viable option.
After a day of exploration, we checked into the Hunter Getaway Motel, which cost around $146 for the night. The motel offered everything we needed, including a lovely balcony, a refreshing swimming pool, and cozy rooms—a great deal for the price.
The following morning, we decided to explore something different: whiskey and spirits. We headed to the famous Pokolbin Distillery and Tower Whiskey Distillery. The staff at Tower Whiskey were incredibly friendly and took the time to explain their whiskey-making process in detail. I learned that many whiskey makers use barrels that once held wine, cherry, or cord, infusing the whiskey with subtle fruity, nutty, or spicy flavors.
Surprisingly, we encountered several kangaroos in front of the distillery, adding to the charm of our visit.
Our final destination was Bimbadgen Winery, perched on a hilltop and offering breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards. The highlight of our visit was their wood-fired pizzeria, where we ordered a delicious margherita pizza with chicken as an add-on. The pizza was so good that we devoured it in minutes, leaving no crumbs behind.
