El Salvador, located in Central America, is a small yet captivating country known for its incredible landscapes, from world-class surfing spots to stunning volcanoes. After a decade since my last visit, I was eager to explore the changes in this beautiful nation, especially after the significant improvements in safety and infrastructure under President Nayib Bukele. Here are my top 10 places to visit in El Salvador.
San Salvador, the capital and largest city, is a vibrant hub of culture and history. Located about 40 minutes from the airport, it has transformed significantly over the years. The Central Histórico is a must-visit area, where you can explore the National Palace and the beautiful National Library, which recently opened to the public. The Salvador del Mundo Monument, built in 1942, is another iconic landmark situated in a bustling roundabout.
Just outside San Salvador, the Rainbow Slide at Picnic Steakhouse is a thrilling experience. For around $5, you can take a ride down this steep slide, which is a popular attraction on social media. The adrenaline rush is worth it!
Overlooking San Salvador, the El Boquerón Volcano features a massive crater with another small volcano inside. It’s a great spot for hiking and enjoying the breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
A hike to the Taman Waterfalls is an adventure worth taking. Located in lush mountains, the journey involves a steep descent, but the sight of the massive waterfall in a gorge is rewarding. Cliff jumping at the smaller waterfall adds to the fun, making it a refreshing stop after a hot hike.
El Tunco is perhaps the most famous beach in El Salvador, known for its vibrant atmosphere and surf culture. The beach, named after a rock formation resembling a pig, is a great place to relax, enjoy local cuisine, and watch surfers catch waves. The sunsets here are spectacular.
Just 20 minutes up the coast from El Tunco, El Zonte offers another beautiful surfing destination. The stunning sea cliffs and picturesque beach make it a perfect spot for relaxation and adventure.
