Mokra Gora station is beautifully preserved and serves as the main departure point for the Šargan Eight railway. The station captures the nostalgia of narrow-gauge rail travel from the Yugoslav era, featuring a quirky ticket office and a restaurant serving traditional Serbian cuisine. Visitors can also find guest accommodations at the station, making it an ideal spot for longer stays.
The train for today's journey is a Serbian type 740 locomotive, built in the early 1980s. These locomotives are common across many of Europe’s narrow-gauge railways and have recently undergone significant overhauls. The Šargan Eight railway features a variety of basic and old carriages from different countries, adding to its unique character.
The Šargan Eight railway has a fascinating history. Originally, it served as a key intercity mainline connecting Sarajevo and Belgrade. The line opened in the 1920s, utilizing a narrow gauge of 760mm to navigate the region's challenging terrain. However, by the 1970s, the line was closed, and parts of it were upgraded to standard gauge, leaving no railway connection between these major cities today.
As we boarded the train for the 10:30 service to Šargan Vitasi, the excitement was palpable. The journey lasts approximately 35 minutes, covering 15 kilometers (about 9 miles). Despite a slight delay, we set off, and the adventure began.
The first part of the route takes us eastward, winding around tight curves as we climb higher into the mountains. The scenery is breathtaking, with the diesel engine roaring as we tackle the gradients. The narrow-gauge lines often provide a rough ride, but this only adds to the authenticity of the experience.
One of the highlights of the journey is the "eight" section of the railway, where the track crosses itself twice, allowing the train to gain height while running alongside sheer cliff edges. This section is not only a feat of engineering but also offers some of the most stunning views along the route.
As we traverse the landscape, we pass through various stations, including Golubići, which exists solely for its incredible viewpoint, and Jatare, the largest station en route, featuring a restaurant and souvenir shop. The tiny station of Krst, with no infrastructure, provides a unique photo opportunity as the train passes below.
A return ticket on the Šargan Eight costs 1200 Serbian dinar, which may seem steep for a short journey, but it reflects the railway's preserved status and historical significance. The railway is somewhat isolated, making access a bit challenging, but the experience is well worth the effort.
After a delightful ride, we arrived at Šargan Vitasi, the current terminus of the line. This quaint station is just as well-maintained as Mokra Gora, albeit on a smaller scale. The journey concludes, leaving passengers with lasting memories of the stunning landscapes and the charm of narrow-gauge travel.
