When you think of Belgium, what comes to mind? For many, it’s the delightful combination of beer and chocolate. This small yet vibrant country, bordered by France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Germany, is renowned for its rich culinary offerings and cultural heritage. With over 220,000 tons of chocolate produced annually, that’s about 22 kilos per citizen! Additionally, Belgium is the birthplace of beloved characters like Tintin and the Smurfs.
Brussels, the capital city, serves as a major transportation hub in Europe, making it easy to visit by high-speed train. In this blog post, we will explore a three-day itinerary that captures the essence of Brussels, showcasing its famous attractions, delicious food, and unique culture.
Our adventure begins with a warm cup of hot chocolate, a perfect way to start the day in this chocolate-loving country. Afterward, we treat ourselves to pancakes, with one topped with salted caramel and banana, and the other with bacon and eggs. The flavors are rich and indulgent, making every calorie worth it.
Next, we head to the Grand-Place, the most famous and beautiful square in Brussels. This UNESCO World Heritage site is surrounded by stunning architecture, including the Town Hall and the King’s House. The square is not only a feast for the eyes but also a hub of history.
Interestingly, the Grand-Place features buildings designed by three different architects over various time periods, resulting in an asymmetrical appearance. The intricate designs and varying window styles tell a story of the city’s architectural evolution.
During our visit, we are fortunate to witness the Flower Carpet event, where the square is adorned with a vibrant display of flowers, symbolizing Brussels’ diversity. We purchase tickets to view this spectacle from above, promising a breathtaking experience.
Just off the Grand-Place, we find a statue of an important politician who played a crucial role in recovering Brussels from the Flemings in the 14th century. Legend has it that touching this statue brings good luck and ensures a return to Brussels. Naturally, we join the crowd in hoping for a bit of luck!
No visit to Brussels is complete without meeting the famous Manneken Pis. This small statue of a little boy urinating has become an emblematic symbol of the city. There are various stories surrounding its significance, including its connection to the city’s tannery past and a heroic tale of a boy who diffused a bomb.
While the statue we see is a replica, the original is housed in a nearby museum, which we plan to visit later.
Surrounding the Grand-Place are the guild houses, which historically served as tax collection points. Each house represents different trades, from butchers to bakers, and even the guild of beer, as indicated by the hops and barley motifs. These buildings date back to the 1600s, a period marked by the bombardment of Brussels by French troops, which destroyed many structures, leaving only a few facades intact.
On our final day, we delve deeper into the rich history and culture of Brussels. We explore various neighborhoods, each with its unique charm and character. The city is filled with sculptures and souvenirs that reflect its heritage, making every corner a potential discovery.
