As we approach Keenbrook, we slow down to receive permission to proceed. The climb becomes more intense as we prepare to engage run eight, pushing our locomotive to its limits. Despite our efforts, we remain somewhat under track speed due to the horsepower available. This section of the journey highlights the challenges faced by engineers as they navigate the steep inclines of Cajon Pass.
East of Keenbrook, significant developments are underway. BNSF is currently grading for a much-needed third main track that will extend all the way to Summit. This project, estimated to cost nearly $100 million, is essential for alleviating congestion in this busy rail corridor. After conquering the summit, we transition into fast, high desert running as we make our way toward the town of Barstow.
