This blog post recounts a traveler's experience in Mumbai, India, highlighting the challenges of long flights, the joy of reconnecting with family, and the vibrant local culture and cuisine, including traditional foods and activities.
After a long 10 months without seeing my parents, I decided it was time to visit India. The excitement of returning to my roots was palpable, but the journey was not without its challenges.
The flight to India was a grueling 17 and a half hours, filled with the sounds of crying children. I quickly learned that traveling with kids can be quite the ordeal. The noise was relentless, and I found myself wishing I had my favorite earbuds with me. If only I had my Rayon Everyday earbuds, which offer active noise cancellation, a 32-hour battery life, and quick charging capabilities. These features would have made my flight much more bearable.
Upon landing in Mumbai, I was immediately struck by the heat and humidity. It was a stark contrast to the climate I was used to. My first day was filled with family reunions and cultural experiences. I was eager to dive into the local cuisine, starting with traditional Indian dishes.
One of my first culinary adventures was trying Indian coras, a type of traditional clothing, and sampling various local foods. I was introduced to Momos, which are dumplings filled with meat or vegetables, originating from Nepal. They are a delightful treat that I enjoyed immensely.
I also tried Pani Puri, a popular street food consisting of a fried shell filled with spicy water and chickpeas. The experience of eating these dishes was not just about the food; it was about the vibrant atmosphere and the joy of sharing these moments with family.
As I explored Mumbai, I was fascinated by the local customs and traditions. I learned about the sidewalk rule, where men walk on the side closest to the road to protect women. This small gesture of chivalry was a reminder of the cultural differences I was experiencing.
I also indulged in a manicure and pedicure for the first time, which was both relaxing and a bit ticklish. Despite the discomfort at times, I appreciated the pampering and the opportunity to bond with my family.
Despite the indulgent food, I made it a point to work out while on vacation. My dad and I hit the gym together, something we rarely get to do since we live in different states. The gym was beautiful, and we made the most of our time there, joking about "curls for the girls" and enjoying the camaraderie of working out together.
Throughout my stay, I cherished the time spent with family. Visiting relatives and sharing meals brought back memories and strengthened our bonds. I learned about my family's favorite dishes, like Aloo Tikki, a spiced potato cutlet, and Biryani, a fragrant rice dish that varies by region.
As my trip to Mumbai came to an end, I reflected on the experiences I had. From the chaotic flight to the warmth of family reunions and the rich flavors of Indian cuisine, this journey was a reminder of the importance of family and cultural heritage. I left India with a heart full of memories and a promise to return sooner than the last time.
