It was 5:43 AM when we set off on our adventure, having woken up at 4:00 AM. The early morning was pitch black, but as we drove towards the airport, the horizon began to light up with the promise of a new day. Excitement filled the air as we were headed to Italy, a country I had always dreamed of visiting but had never managed to explore.
Upon arriving in Rome, I was filled with anticipation. This trip was particularly special for me as my grandfather had roots in this beautiful city. Our itinerary included stops in Florence and Venice, but Rome was our first destination. Despite the rain that greeted us, we were fortunate to have enjoyed lovely weather over the Easter weekend prior to our trip.
As we drove from the airport to our hotel, I was struck by the beauty of the surroundings. I had expected Italy to resemble Spain, but it was distinctly different. The architecture, the landscape, and the atmosphere felt authentically Italian. Our hotel, Hotel Deuti, was charming and exuded a Mediterranean vibe, complete with lemon trees and quaint decor.
Our first day in Rome was packed with sightseeing. We had a list of iconic locations to visit, including the Colosseum, the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain, and the Spanish Steps. Although we knew we couldn't see everything in one day, we were determined to make the most of our time.
The hotel we stayed in was one of my favorites, reminiscent of Claridge's but with a Mediterranean twist. The staff were incredibly accommodating, especially with our little one, Casper. After a refreshing breakfast, we set out to explore the city.
One of the highlights of our trip was indulging in local delicacies. We stumbled upon a delightful lemon shop that offered lemon-flavored ice creams and drinks. I couldn't resist trying the lemon ice cream served in a lemon shell, which was as delicious as it sounds. Additionally, we enjoyed gelato, sampling various flavors that showcased the rich culinary culture of Italy.
The next day, we made our way to the Vatican. It was a significant time to visit, as we had just learned of the Pope's passing. The atmosphere was somber yet respectful, with many people paying their respects. Although we couldn't queue to enter due to time constraints, we were grateful to have seen the Vatican from the outside and to have experienced the energy of the crowd.
As our time in Rome came to an end, I reflected on the beauty and history that surrounded us. The city felt alive with its rich past, and I was captivated by its authenticity. I realized that Rome had not been on my bucket list before, but now that I had experienced it, I understood why so many people fall in love with this city.
Our journey through Rome was unforgettable, filled with stunning sights, delicious food, and rich history. As we boarded the train to Florence, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had shared. Rome had left an indelible mark on my heart, and I knew I would return to explore its wonders in greater depth. Until next time, arrivederci!
