My journey began with a desire to distance myself from the political climate of the United States, which I found increasingly unappealing. This led me to explore citizenship options in various countries, particularly those in the Global South, which I believe are poised for growth.
For many individuals, especially those holding passports from geopolitically unstable countries, having a backup plan is essential. Countries like the United States impose worldwide taxation, making it crucial to have alternative citizenship options. By diversifying my citizenship portfolio, I can protect myself from potential political and economic turmoil.
I am applying for citizenship in Cambodia, a country I have been fascinated with since 2006. Cambodia offers a relatively attainable citizenship program, which I first wrote about on my blog in 2013. The country is part of the ASEAN region, which boasts a population of nearly 700 million people, making it an attractive location for investment.
As a citizen, I would have the ability to purchase land and property, which is currently restricted for foreigners. The real estate market in Cambodia presents unique opportunities, particularly in the capital city of Phnom Penh. While property prices can be surprisingly high, being a citizen would allow me to invest in local properties, such as shop house apartments, which are often more affordable than new condos.
The cost of Cambodian citizenship involves a donation of approximately $250,000, along with legal fees. This investment not only grants me citizenship but also access to the Angkor Wat temples and the potential for future investment growth in the region.
Next on my list is Egypt, a country that many overlook due to misconceptions about its geopolitical stability. However, I find Egypt to be a fascinating place with a rich history that has always intrigued me. The Egyptian passport is more geopolitically neutral than many might assume, and it offers a pathway to citizenship through real estate investment.
To obtain Egyptian citizenship, I would need to invest $300,000 in property, which I plan to do by purchasing secondhand properties rather than new developments. This strategy allows for better negotiation and potentially higher returns on investment. The real estate market in Cairo is particularly appealing, with prices remaining low compared to other major cities.
Finally, I am looking to apply for citizenship in Portugal through the Golden Visa program. Despite some frustrations with the process, I believe that Portugal offers a stable environment and a pathway to European Union citizenship.
Portugal’s culture of openness and trade aligns with my values, and the country has a history of welcoming foreigners. While I do not plan to use my Portuguese citizenship to travel extensively, it provides access to 30 countries within the EU, enhancing my mobility and investment options.
