Welcome back to Wingspan Adventures and Flight! In this episode, we take you on an exciting journey from Butler, Missouri to Shelnam, Missouri, landing at the unique Turkey Mountain Airport. This airport features a 4,000 ft grass strip located on the picturesque Table Rock Lake. Join me, Nate, and my friend Alejandro as we share our experiences and insights about flying.
As we prepare for our flight, Alejandro and I board his Bonanza aircraft. The excitement is palpable as we announce our departure:
"Beller traffic, Nanza 57 tango taking runway 36 departing to the south."
With the engines roaring and the plane coming alive, we lift off the runway, feeling the thrill of flight.
One of the amusing aspects of flying is the unique names of airports. Turkey Mountain Airport, with its code M O Z00, certainly stands out. Alejandro and I share a laugh about the name, which adds a light-hearted touch to our journey.
"I know, cracks me up. It's Moo. Yeah, that is the funniest airport name I think I've ever heard of," Alejandro remarks, highlighting the quirky charm of aviation.
As we navigate the skies, I recall a lesson learned early in my flying career: the importance of staying hydrated.
"Remember to bring water, especially when instructing," I advise Alejandro, sharing a humorous anecdote from my first lesson with a new student.
I struggled to make a radio call due to a dry mouth, which made for a comical yet stressful situation.
Both Alejandro and I share a deep-rooted passion for aviation that began in our childhood. I recount my journey:
"I wanted to be a pilot since I was a kid. I would look up to the sky and think planes were really cool. My dad had a traveling job, so we often visited the airport."
Despite the challenges, including my father's passing, I pursued my dream of becoming a pilot. With hard work and dedication, I achieved my flight instructor ratings and accumulated over 550 flight hours.
Alejandro shares his story as well, revealing how he was inspired by a neighbor who flew B25s during World War II. His first flight in a 172 solidified his passion for aviation, despite facing skepticism from others about the feasibility of becoming a pilot.
As we fly, we reflect on the camaraderie within the aviation community.
"Aviation is still a pretty small community, so it's pretty awesome to be part of this," Alejandro notes, emphasizing the friendships and connections formed through shared experiences in flying.
As we near our destination, we communicate with air traffic control:
"Turkey mountain traffic 5 center tango got traffic in sight. Looks like we're number three. We might have to plan to go around here."
After assessing the situation, we decide to go around for a better approach.
Finally, we arrive at Turkey Mountain Airport, affectionately dubbed "Turkey Lab" by us. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the unique charm of this airport is evident as we prepare to land.
"Welcome to Turkey Mountain Airport!" we announce, excited to have reached our destination.
