Our journey begins in Bukittinggi, a city in West Sumatra known as the heart of Minangkabau culture. The first stop is to visit the iconic Jam Gadang, a clock tower that symbolizes the city. After soaking in the sights, we indulge in one of the region's legendary culinary delights: Ampiang Dadiah. This traditional dessert, known worldwide, is a must-try for anyone visiting the area.
Ampiang is made from ground glutinous rice, while Dadiah is fermented buffalo milk stored in bamboo for several days. This unique dish is often compared to yogurt and is served with shaved ice, coconut milk, and palm sugar, creating a sweet and savory flavor profile that is both delightful and refreshing. While some team members enjoyed the taste, others found the aroma of fermented buffalo milk challenging.
No visit to Bukittinggi is complete without capturing the grandeur of Jam Gadang. The team records this 26-meter tall structure, which will serve as an asset for the Wonderland Indonesia film project. Our hearts are captivated by Bukittinggi's charm, but the adventure continues as we prepare to explore the breathtaking Ngarai Sianok.
The expedition team gears up to navigate the river leading to Ngarai Sianok, guided by local experts. This journey is essential for gathering accurate references for the Wonderland Indonesia project. The path is challenging, requiring a special jeep to traverse rocky terrains and dense vegetation.
The off-road experience is thrilling, with the team overcoming obstacles such as deep river crossings and narrow paths filled with sharp vegetation. Despite the challenges, the excitement of the journey is palpable, and the stunning views make every effort worthwhile. After approximately 25 minutes of navigating through the rugged landscape, we finally reach a vantage point that reveals the majestic beauty of Ngarai Sianok.
Ngarai Sianok is a remarkable natural wonder, formed by tectonic plate movements in Sumatra. The valley stretches 15 kilometers, with cliffs reaching depths of 100 meters and widths of about 200 meters. This stunning landscape is not only a visual feast but also a testament to Indonesia's rich geological history.
The valley is depicted on the 2000 rupiah banknote, featuring a dancer performing the traditional Tari Piring against the backdrop of Ngarai Sianok. This connection deepens our appreciation for the cultural significance of the area.
Our adventure continues as we travel approximately 50 kilometers from Bukittinggi to Lembah Harau, another breathtaking valley surrounded by steep granite cliffs. The fresh air and lush greenery provide a refreshing atmosphere as we arrive at this picturesque location.
In Lembah Harau, we meet with local representatives, including Pak Mahendra, who shares insights about the government's support for cultural initiatives like Wonderland Indonesia. His enthusiasm for promoting local culture and supporting young filmmakers is inspiring.
A highlight of our visit is learning about Tari Piring, a traditional dance from the Minangkabau culture. This dance symbolizes gratitude for bountiful harvests and showcases the community's cooperative spirit. The dancers, adorned in vibrant traditional attire, perform gracefully, embodying the essence of Minangkabau culture.
