On March 24, 2025, a dramatic incident unfolded at a Walmart in Marion County, Florida, involving a man who attempted to steal merchandise and subsequently led law enforcement on a chaotic chase.
Employees at the Walmart reported a suspicious individual stuffing items into his backpack. The suspect, later identified as 27-year-old Khalil Malik Caswell, was caught on surveillance cameras pocketing several items before making a hasty exit toward the back of the store.
Upon arrival, deputies discovered an abandoned backpack near a wooded area behind the store. The bag contained various stolen goods, including camping gear, knives, lights, and a portable speaker, all confirmed as merchandise taken from Walmart.
As deputies began canvassing the area, they questioned bystanders to gather information about the suspect's whereabouts. Witnesses indicated that Caswell had sprinted into oncoming traffic before disappearing down a residential path.
Officers quickly coordinated their efforts, trying to locate him before he could escape. They were informed that he had ditched his stolen merchandise and was likely hiding nearby.
Eventually, deputies spotted Caswell walking along a nearby road. When ordered to stop, he took off running again, this time sprinting across several lanes of traffic. In a desperate attempt to evade capture, he dove into a patch of thick bushes.
Officers quickly surrounded the area, calling for him to surrender. Moments later, Caswell emerged with his hands raised, insisting he hadn’t done anything wrong. However, deputies restrained him and conducted a search, discovering pepper spray, a knife, and a wallet in his pockets.
During questioning, Caswell admitted to stealing the items, claiming he panicked and dropped the backpack when he noticed the officers closing in. He was visibly confused and defensive, repeatedly asking what he had done wrong.
When asked about the stolen items, he described the contents of the backpack, which included knives, camping gear, and a speaker. He explained that he had come to Walmart with a man named Mark, who allegedly encouraged him to steal the goods to make some money.
Officers recovered all the stolen merchandise, valued at $266, and returned it to the store. Khalil Malik Caswell was arrested and charged with petty theft and resisting an officer.
This incident serves as a reminder of the lengths some individuals will go to in an attempt to steal, as well as the swift response of law enforcement in apprehending suspects.
