On Republic Day 2025, the first Vande Bharat train journey from Katra to Kashmir marked a historic moment in Indian rail travel, showcasing stunning landscapes and engineering marvels along the route.
Namaste, Sat Shri Akal, Assalam Valekum, Jai Hind friends! Today, I am your host Saurabh, and I am reporting live from Katra Railway Station in Jammu and Kashmir. It is January 26, 2025, Republic Day, and I extend my best wishes to all fellow countrymen on this significant day. Today marks a special occasion as I embark on a historic train journey from Katra to Srinagar, the first of its kind in history.
As I stand on platform number one, I can see two Vande Bharat trains, one of which is set to take us to Kashmir. The trial run for this service was conducted yesterday, January 25, and today we are ready to board. The train is scheduled to depart at 8:00 AM, and as I look around, the atmosphere is filled with excitement. The Katra Shrine is visible in the background, and helicopters are seen taking pilgrims to the top for darshan of Mother Goddess.
At 8:16 AM, we receive clearance to depart, and the journey begins. As we leave Katra, we enter tunnel number T33, and the views are breathtaking. The morning sun illuminates the landscape, and the train curves beautifully around the mountains.
As we progress, we cross several tunnels and bridges, including the Anji Khat Bridge, which is India's first cable-stayed rail bridge, stretching 725 meters. The beauty of this bridge is remarkable, and it sets the tone for the stunning views that follow.
We then approach Reasi Railway Station, which is carved into the mountains, and shortly after, we enter tunnel number T37. The engineering marvels continue as we cruise towards the world's highest rail bridge over the Chenab River, measuring 1.4 kilometers in length. The train glides over this bridge at a speed of 85 km/h, offering a spectacular view of the surrounding landscape.
As we navigate through the mountains, we pass through multiple tunnels, including T43 and T44, and witness the beauty of Sangal Dan and Sambar Railway Stations, both nestled amidst the mountains. The journey is filled with awe-inspiring sights, showcasing the incredible engineering that has made this route possible.
After crossing the longest tunnel in India, measuring 12.7 kilometers, we arrive at Khari Railway Station, surrounded by majestic mountains. The train continues its journey, and we soon reach Bani Hal, where we prepare to cross the Pir Panjal range.
As we enter the Pir Panjal Tunnel, we anticipate a dramatic change in scenery. Upon exiting, we are welcomed into the lush, snow-covered Kashmir Valley. The contrast is striking, with the dry landscape of the mountains giving way to the vibrant beauty of Kashmir.
We continue our journey, passing through Hiller Shahabad, the highest broad gauge railway station in India, at an altitude of 1753 meters. The views are nothing short of spectacular, with snow-capped mountains surrounding us.
As we approach Budgam Railway Station, we learn that our journey will extend to Baramulla, the northernmost railway point in India. After departing Budgam at 12:09 PM, we cover the final 40 kilometers, reaching Baramulla at 12:42 PM. The entire journey from Katra to Baramulla spans 248 kilometers and takes approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes, averaging a speed of 55 km/h.
Finally, we arrive at Baramulla, where the tracks terminate. The journey has been an incredible experience, showcasing the beauty of Kashmir and the engineering prowess behind the Vande Bharat train.
