After months of criticism and underperformance, I took my C8 ZR1 to the drag strip to prove its true capabilities. Following a transmission repair and ECU reset, I achieved a personal best 1/4 mile time of 9.38 seconds, surpassing Chevrolet's advertised record. For the past six months, I have been facing criticism and doubts about the performance of my Chevrolet C8 ZR1. Many claimed that my car was underperforming, broken, or low on power. This article chronicles my journey to finally prove that my ZR1 can indeed keep up with the best and break Chevrolet's own advertised 1/4 mile time.
The skepticism began back in July of the previous year when I invited Brooks from DragTimes.com to bring his cars to the track to compare against my ZR1. I was confident in my car's capabilities, but the results were disappointing. My ZR1 lost race after race against similarly powered cars such as the Lamborghini Huracan STO, a heavily modified McLaren 750S, and a Tesla Model S Plaid. It only managed to beat out a Porsche Turbo S.
As more ZR1s were delivered, other owners began posting their own 1/4 mile times, many of which were significantly faster than mine. While Chevrolet advertised 1/4 mile times around 9.3 seconds, my best was still 9.79 seconds. I was nearly a second slower in the 60 to 130 mph times compared to other owners.
I held firm in my belief that the slower times were due to environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and track preparation. Unlike others testing in the cooler Northeast, I was consistently testing in the hot and humid Florida climate, which is less favorable for drag racing.
However, Brooks then acquired his own ZR1 and began testing it here in Florida as well. Surprisingly, he set a stock C8 ZR1 record of 9.28 seconds in the 1/4 mile, over half a second faster than anything I had run. Even the Corvette engineers I spoke to did not think anything was wrong with my car. They suggested that my unfamiliarity with drag racing and poor conditions were the reasons for the slower times.
Despite the doubts from the internet, I decided to return to the very track where Brooks set the stock C8 ZR1 record. The conditions were great on a cool day with excellent track prep. My goal was to find out once and for all if my ZR1 was broken or if it could break Chevrolet's own 1/4 mile time.
Since my last 1/4 mile run, the only changes made to the car were:

At Bradenton Motorsports Park, with Brooks and several other high-performance cars present, I made my first pass. The conditions were favorable with a density altitude of about 200 feet and a temperature around 70°F.
The run felt incredibly fast, much faster than I remembered. The quarter mile time was 9.38 seconds at 154 mph, a new personal best and a record for me. This time surpassed Chevrolet's advertised 9.5-second quarter mile for the ZR1.
The 60 to 130 mph time was 4.26 seconds, a significant improvement. Brooks noted that my launch was not even optimal, with a 0 to 60 mph time of 2.5 seconds compared to my previous best of 2.2 seconds. Had I matched my best launch, the time could have been even lower, possibly in the 2.1-second range.
I made another pass shortly after, recording a 9.41-second quarter mile with a 60 to 130 mph time of 4.49 seconds and a 0 to 60 mph time of 2.46 seconds. This confirmed that my ZR1 was no longer the slowest in the world.
I am thrilled that my ZR1 is performing as it should, even with just a catless downpipe modification and stock intake and tune. The car hooked immediately on street tires, and the weather conditions played a significant role in achieving these times.
The "Broken ZR1 Chronicles" have come to a close. My car is now consistently running in the 9.3 to 9.4-second range, faster than Chevrolet's advertised times.
Looking ahead, I have received some new parts and possibly drag wheels that I plan to add to the car to improve times even further.
This journey has been a test of patience and persistence. Despite the doubts and criticism, I have proven that my C8 ZR1 is capable of exceptional performance. Environmental factors, mechanical issues, and familiarity with drag racing all played a role in the initial slower times. With proper maintenance and ideal conditions, the ZR1 can indeed break Chevrolet's own 1/4 mile record.
