The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has cleared trees along a stretch of I-94 near Metro Airport as part of the Restore 94 project, which involves rebuilding and restructuring the freeway. MDOT explained that the tree clearing is part of the Restore 94 project, a major initiative to rebuild and restructure the freeway. The project covers the stretch of I-94 from I-275 to Michigan Avenue at the Dearborn-Detroit border. The freeway is being reconstructed down to the dirt to improve traffic flow and safety for drivers.
Specifically, in the area near Ingster to Ecorse, the freeway is being moved through what was previously a wooded area. This necessitated the removal of the trees to make way for the new freeway alignment.
Residents expressed concern about the environmental impact, including the loss of trees and the effect on local wildlife, particularly deer that inhabited the area. Logs and stumps left behind were visible, raising questions about the future of the local ecosystem.
Diane Cross from MDOT responded to these concerns by assuring that the tree removal is temporary and part of a larger plan. Once the project is completed, approximately 3,000 new trees will be planted along the outside lanes of the freeway. These trees are intended to absorb vehicle emissions, reduce noise pollution, and restore some of the natural environment.
Regarding the deer population, Cross acknowledged the concerns but noted that since the project began, there have been no reported increases in deer-vehicle collisions. The new tree planting is also expected to deter deer from returning to the immediate freeway area, potentially reducing future accidents.
For the next few months, residents should not expect major visible changes in the cleared area. However, once construction progresses, all traffic will be shifted to the westbound side of the freeway for both directions. This traffic management is part of the ongoing reconstruction efforts.
