Today, I am excited to share my packing strategy for an upcoming photography workshop in Costa Rica, along with my initial impressions of the new Nikon ZF firmware 2.0 update. This trip promises to be an incredible adventure, and I will be joined by fellow photographers David Archer and Dennis Alverde, along with a fantastic group of workshop participants.
Packing Essentials for Costa Rica
Carry-On vs. Checked Luggage
For this trip, I am committed to packing everything in carry-on luggage. This includes a small carry-on bag and a larger one, with only a minimal amount of items going into checked luggage. The reason for this is simple: the gear I am bringing is too precious to risk losing.
Camera Gear
I will be taking three cameras:
- Nikon Z9
- Nikon ZF
- Leica Q3
These cameras are essential for capturing the stunning landscapes and wildlife of Costa Rica.
Nikon ZF Firmware 2.0 Update
The recent firmware update for the Nikon ZF has introduced several features that I have been eagerly anticipating:
- Exposure Delay Mode: This feature allows the camera to wait for a specified duration after the shutter button is pressed, reducing shake-induced blurring, which is particularly useful for landscape photography.
- Half Press to Cancel Zoom in Manual Focus: This new option allows photographers to zoom in on a subject for precise focusing and then easily return to the full view with a half press of the shutter button. This is a game-changer for those using manual focus lenses.
- Bird Detect Autofocus: Although the ZF is not primarily designed for fast action or wildlife photography, the addition of bird detect autofocus is a welcome surprise and indicates that Nikon is listening to its users.

Additional Gear for the Workshop
Aside from my cameras, I am bringing a few other essential items:
- Tripod: A lightweight tripod for potential sunset shots, although I expect to do most shooting handheld.
- Lenses: I recommend participants bring fast long lenses, such as the 400mm f/4.5 or 600mm PF, to capture small animals in low light conditions.
- Cleaning Kit: A sensor cleaning kit to ensure all cameras are in peak condition throughout the workshop.
- HDMI Cable: For image reviews at the resort.
- Accessories: I will also be testing some new prototypes from Naiva during the workshop.

Main Carry-On Bag: NAVO 60C
My main carry-on bag is the NAVO 60C, which is designed for easy access and organization. Here’s what I have packed:
- Camera Insert: A removable camera insert that holds my Z9, ZF, and Leica Q3 securely.
- Rainfly: A waterproof cover to protect my gear from the tropical rain.
- Filters: A selection of magnetic filters for various shooting conditions, including polarizers and neutral density filters.
- Battery Bank: A powerful battery bank that can charge multiple devices simultaneously, ensuring I have enough power for all my cameras and accessories.

In my secondary carry-on bag, I have included:
- Laptop and Charger: For editing and managing photos during the trip.
- Walkie-Talkies: To communicate with David and others when we are in different vehicles.
- Headphones and Reading Material: For entertainment during travel.
