Welcome to an insightful episode of Betting on Success, where Mark Morton, aka Morty, hosts Scott Erdmann, the Senior Director of Corporate Partnerships for the Las Vegas Raiders. This episode explores Scott's unique career path, his approach to business and life, and the lessons he's learned along the way.
Scott Erdmann was born in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. After the passing of his mother when he was 10, he moved to Massachusetts with his father’s family, where he spent much of his formative years. He later attended Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida, primarily choosing the school for its proximity to the beach and to escape cold weather.
Scott’s entry into the sports industry was somewhat unplanned. Just two weeks before graduating college, he was unsure about his career direction. After interviewing with Northwestern Mutual, he attended a career fair where the Florida Panthers hockey team recruited him for a new business sales role. Despite the modest salary offer of $13,000 a year with no benefits, Scott chose to pursue his passion for sports.
During his time with the Panthers, Scott learned valuable lessons from CEO Michael Yormark, who emphasized the mantra "control the controllables." Despite the team’s struggles on the ice, the focus remained on controlling what could be controlled in the business. Scott started in ticket sales, enduring the grind of cold calls and rejections, which built his resilience.
After the Panthers, Scott worked with Florida Atlantic University overseeing a new stadium project, gaining experience in college sports infrastructure. However, he found the politics in college sports challenging and transitioned to the Dallas Cowboys, where he spent a decade.
At the Cowboys, Scott worked in ticket sales and sponsorships, gaining a comprehensive understanding of revenue streams. He admired the Jones family’s approach to ownership, particularly their dedication to building strong relationships with partners regardless of the investment size.
Scott also became involved with Legends, a joint venture between the Cowboys and the New York Yankees, focused on enhancing stadium food and beverage experiences and monetizing stadiums beyond game days. This innovative approach included premium seating, event hosting, and operational efficiencies, setting new standards in sports venue management.
Scott joined the Raiders as Senior Director of Partnerships right as the COVID-19 pandemic hit, coinciding with the opening of the new Allegiant Stadium. The pandemic posed significant challenges, including renegotiating numerous partnership agreements and managing the absence of fans during the inaugural season.
Despite these hurdles, Scott credits Raiders owner Mark Davis for his fan-centric approach, choosing not to hold games with limited attendance. The team creatively used branded tarps to provide value to partners during games without fans.
Throughout his career, Scott has valued relationships and mentorship. His wife, who also works in sponsorship sales, is a significant influence, understanding the demands of the industry. He also credits mentors like the Jones family, Chad Estus, Doug Dawson, and Eric Sudall for shaping his professional philosophy.
Scott emphasizes that success in sports business is less about tactics and more about people and relationships. This perspective has guided his approach to leadership and partnership development.
Scott describes his career philosophy as akin to a "Ted Lasso approach"—being curious and open to learning. He enjoys engaging with brands to understand their strategies and finding innovative ways to create operational efficiencies.
His curiosity has led him to diverse ventures, including investing in Lee Canyon ski mountain in Las Vegas and exploring opportunities in Chile. This openness to new experiences reflects his belief in the value of continuous learning and adaptability.
Scott’s competitive nature has been a driving force since his early days in sports sales. While he admits his competitiveness has softened on the golf course, it remains strong in business.
He also shares his interest in biohacking, inspired by social media and a desire to maintain health and vitality for his family. This includes experimenting with supplements and wellness routines to ensure longevity and quality of life.
Scott does not have a fixed endpoint for his career but remains passionate about learning and exploring new opportunities. He values the journey and the relationships formed along the way more than specific titles or positions.
He encourages openness to unexpected paths and emphasizes the importance of being a good human being—someone people enjoy interacting with and respect.
Scott Erdmann’s story is one of resilience, curiosity, and relationship-building. From humble beginnings in ticket sales to leading partnerships for an NFL team, his journey offers valuable lessons for anyone aspiring to succeed in sports business or any competitive industry.
His focus on controlling the controllables, investing in relationships, and maintaining a curious mindset provides a blueprint for sustained success.
