This article explores the life of Robert House, his rise as a technological and economic titan before the Great War, his survival strategy during the nuclear apocalypse, and his establishment of New Vegas as a powerful independent city-state. It covers his alliances, battles, and the pivotal role of the platinum chip in shaping the future of the Mojave Wasteland.
"War never changes." This iconic phrase sets the tone for the story of Robert House, a central figure in the Fallout universe, particularly in Fallout: New Vegas. Born near Las Vegas on June 25, 2020, Robert House's life journey from a young orphan to a powerful autocrat and visionary leader is a tale of genius, survival, and ambition.
Robert House lost his parents at the tender age of two. His half-brother, Anthony, took control of their father's business, the H&H Tool Company, while scheming to inherit the entire family fortune. Despite these early hardships, Robert's natural genius and relentless work ethic propelled him forward.
He attended the prestigious Commonwealth Institute of Technology and, by 2042 at age 22, founded Robco Industries. Under his leadership, Robco grew into one of the wealthiest and most influential companies globally. By age 30, House had amassed a fortune of $30 billion.
Expanding his empire, House became the controlling shareholder of Repcon Aerospace and the Lucky 38 Hotel and Casino. He even attempted a hostile takeover of H&H Tool Company to avenge his half-brother's betrayal. The media often portrayed him as an eccentric billionaire, with rumors circulating about his unusual interests, such as scanning a celebrity's brain to try on different outfits virtually.
Aware of the world's dwindling resources and escalating conflicts, House ran predictive mathematical models. By 2065, he concluded that a global nuclear war was inevitable within 15 years.
Recognized as a titan of industry, House was invited by Vault-Tec Industries to an exclusive meeting to discuss a partnership to profit from the impending apocalypse. Vault-Tec had been commissioned by the U.S. government to build 122 vaults across America to shelter select populations in case of nuclear war.
However, these vaults had a secret purpose. Working with the Enclave, a deep-state conspiracy, only 17 vaults were designed as controls, while the other 105 conducted social, physical, and psychological experiments to study human endurance and obedience. The Enclave aimed to rebuild civilization either by conquering the wasteland or colonizing another world.
Vault-Tec's strategy was to ensure the survival of their executives and useful citizens underground, breeding new generations to restart civilization in their image. To fund this, Vault-Tec offered ownership of several vaults to major corporations, including Robco, to conduct unrestricted experiments.
House questioned the logic of investing in shelters that might never be used. Barbara Howard, a Vault-Tec representative, replied that they could guarantee results by initiating the nuclear war themselves, weaponizing time to win capitalism's ultimate game by eliminating all other humans and monopolizing the future.
With the end of the world imminent, House dedicated himself to his survival and that of Las Vegas. To preserve his life and combat aging, he placed his physical body into a life support machine and connected his brain to a powerful supercomputer. He used robots as avatars to enact his will.
Anticipating loneliness, House created Jane Securatron, a devoted female companion based on brain scans he had acquired.
To protect Las Vegas, House built a robust defense grid, including a laser defense network and Securitron robots serving as police and military forces. He commissioned the creation of a platinum chip in Sunnyvale to upgrade and enhance the entire defense system.
Tragically, the Great War began on October 23, 2077, just 20 hours before the platinum chip's delivery. Nuclear weapons were launched worldwide, ending human civilization in hours and killing billions.
The war's origins remain uncertain. Some believe China launched first due to defeat in the Cenoamerican War; others suspect the U.S. or even Vault-Tec and the Enclave, who may have started the war to begin their experiments.
Without the platinum chip, Las Vegas's defense system crashed multiple times but still managed to neutralize 59 warheads and destroy nine others with laser cannons. Some warheads penetrated defenses but none hit the city directly.
House fell into a coma for decades due to the system's inefficiency, allowing scavengers to roam Vegas. He awoke in 2138 but remained hidden until 2274 when he detected New California Republic (NCR) scouts near Hoover Dam.
To assert control, House deployed his Securitrons from the Lucky 38 casino and allied with three local tribes descended from vault dwellers:
Other tribes scattered, but the Kings became a minor power near Freeside.
House offered Vault 21's population integration into New Vegas, causing division. Those in favor won a blackjack game, leading to the vault's abandonment. House removed useful tech and sealed lower levels with cement but preserved upper levels as a hotel and gift shop.
He founded New Vegas as a free economic zone, becoming its president, CEO, and sole proprietor. His governance was a centralized autocracy and libertarian technocracy, focusing on economic and technological affairs without controlling private lives.
House envisioned a future where it would take 20 years to reignite high-tech sectors, 50 years to place people in orbit, and 100 years to send colony ships to other worlds.
Aware of threats from the NCR and Caesar's Legion, both coveting Hoover Dam, House signed the Treaty of New Vegas with the NCR. The NCR gained control of Hoover Dam and McCarran International Airport in exchange for 5% of the dam's energy output and New Vegas's continued independence.
House's strategy was to use NCR soldiers as a shield against Caesar's Legion, weakening both while New Vegas grew stronger. This plan proved prescient during the 2277 Battle of Hoover Dam, where the NCR defeated Caesar's Legion, though the Legion remained a future threat.
To strengthen defenses, House spent millions searching for the platinum chip, finally locating it in 2281. He hired Mojave Express to deliver it with six decoy shipments and secure routes.
However, Courier 6, the actual carrier, was intercepted and robbed by Benny, leader of the Chairman gang. Benny reprogrammed a Securitron to obey him and extracted information about House's plans and the chip's location.
House, outraged, sent another Securitron to save Courier 6's life. Together, they pursued Benny, recovered the chip, and embarked on a legendary adventure.
Courier 6 became influential enough to decide New Vegas's fate during the second Battle of Hoover Dam, choosing to ally with the NCR, Caesar's Legion, Mr. House, or no one to secure independence.
Robert House's story is one of brilliance, survival, and strategic mastery. From a young orphan to the autocratic ruler of New Vegas, his vision shaped the Mojave Wasteland's future. His alliances, battles, and the quest for the platinum chip highlight the complex interplay of power, technology, and human ambition in a post-apocalyptic world.
