This blog post explores the history and future of the Unified Martial Arts Network (UMAN), founded by Grandmaster Jerry Fast. It details the challenges faced, the growth of the organization, and the upcoming events that aim to unite martial artists across various regions, emphasizing community, competition, and respect for traditional martial arts.
Good evening. This is Grandmaster Jerry Fast, and I am here to provide an overview of the Unified Martial Arts Network (UMAN), which I founded in 2007. The journey of UMAN has been filled with challenges, growth, and a commitment to the martial arts community.
In 2007, I, along with Benz and Chris Columbo, set out with the intention of creating an actual league for martial arts. Our first step was to organize tournaments, and in 2008, we successfully held three tournaments in New Jersey. However, as we aimed to expand the organization in 2009, I faced personal challenges, including the near-death experience of my ex-wife during the birth of our last child. This led to a temporary hiatus from UMAN.
During my absence, Mafia Holloway and Gerald Dawson initiated a new league called Massmore, which was a difficult pill to swallow. Despite these setbacks, I welcomed the birth of my fourth child and continued to navigate the complexities of life, including challenges with my clothing line, Rex Suits, and facing adversity from detractors.
It wasn't until 2014 that I returned to the martial arts scene, inspired by Lee Island's efforts to respect and promote the 30-plus age group in competition. Lee Island played a pivotal role in rallying senior competitors, leading to the formation of the Executive Edge team. I created a new uniform that represented our team while maintaining my identity.
In 2014, I introduced the concept of "sniper" fighting, which was previously known as real sport karate. This term reflects the precision and skill of martial artists, akin to sharpshooters in the military. I recognized that while the younger generation engaged in point karate, our approach was distinctly different.
Fast forward to 2026, UMAN is set to launch a full league with ratings across 12 regions, including Puerto Rico. This initiative excites me as it acknowledges the dedication and effort of martial artists who are training hard to lead by example. Notable figures like Billy Blanks, who at 70 years old continues to compete, inspire us all.
The upcoming tournament will feature divisions for competitors aged 60 and above, and I am thrilled to see seasoned fighters like Tony Anu and Luis Ruez participating. Their involvement highlights the importance of experience and skill in martial arts.
As we prepare for the tournament, I want to emphasize the importance of registration. We have limited space, and while there is still room for competitors and spectators, this will change as the event date approaches. I have made it a point to ensure that the judging panel is well-established, with a total of 35 judges ready to oversee the events.
The tournament will feature multiple rings operating simultaneously, allowing for a smooth flow of events. Competitors will have the option to stay for the entire day or return later, depending on their schedules. We aim to create a positive experience for everyone involved, including those who cannot attend in person.
To enhance the experience for those unable to attend, we are working on capturing the tournament on video. While this event will not be broadcast live, we plan to have multiple camera angles for the finals to ensure that every moment is documented.
Looking ahead, our next event is scheduled for February 7th, and we will continue to expand our reach, potentially launching events in Florida. The divisions will cater to various age groups, ensuring that everyone has a chance to compete.
