Nestled in the foothills of a remote mountain, the Meng family and their neighbors, the Jiangs, had not yet faced the threat of conscription by the emperor’s soldiers. One year, the Mengs grew gourds that flourished along their shared fence. One particular gourd crossed the fence and extended into the Jiang’s yard, where it was cared for by both families. When harvest time came, they decided to split the gourd equally. However, as they prepared to divide it, something remarkable happened: the gourd cracked open to reveal a beautiful baby curled inside, smiling up at them. They agreed to raise her together and named their magical, boundary-breaking daughter, Meng Jiang.
Meng Jiang grew into a virtuous and accomplished young woman, infusing life with joy. She dedicated herself to caring for her elderly parents and their land. However, the world around her remained turbulent.
One day, Meng Jiang stumbled upon a young man hiding in her garden. He was Fan Xiliang, a man who had been targeted by the emperor’s soldiers for conscription to build the wall. Fan Xiliang had an elderly mother to care for and knew that obeying the soldiers’ orders would mean almost certain death, so he escaped. Meng Jiang and Fan Xiliang connected instantly, and soon they married. However, their happiness was short-lived.
When the emperor’s soldiers returned, they captured Fan Xiliang. For months, Meng Jiang anxiously watched the horizon, hoping for her husband’s safe return. As the air grew frigid, her worries intensified, prompting her to set out on a perilous journey to find him.
Through bitter snow and howling winds, across rivers and mountains, Meng Jiang undertook the dangerous trek that many others had been forced to complete. Eventually, she reached the construction site, where thousands of workers toiled day and night to realize the emperor’s vision. Stealing into the fray, Meng Jiang whispered her husband’s name to the workers until one man’s eyes glimmered with recognition. Tragically, he revealed that Fan Xiliang had recently died and was rumored to be buried under the wall alongside many others.
Heartbroken beyond words, Meng Jiang could only weep. Her tears filled the construction halls, seeped into the cracks of the wall, and soaked its stone. In a dramatic turn of events, whole portions of the wall crumbled and washed away in the flood of her grief.
Livid, the emperor ordered that the person who had sabotaged his grand project be captured and brought to his palace for punishment. However, when he beheld the otherworldly beauty and virtue that Meng Jiang radiated, his plan changed. Instead of punishment, the emperor suggested that she become one of his imperial concubines.
Faced with few options, Meng Jiang realized she could leverage this wretched proposal to honor her deceased husband and humiliate the emperor. She agreed to the emperor’s proposal but only on the condition that he give Fan Xiliang a grand funeral and attend dressed in the traditional mourning attire he would wear had Fan Xiliang been his own father.
The emperor begrudgingly made the arrangements, and Meng Jiang bid her beloved farewell. With her wish fulfilled, she refused to submit to the emperor or face his punishment. Instead, she cast herself into the nearby water, as all-enveloping as her own tears, never to emerge again.
Meng Jiang left an unjust world as mysteriously as she had entered it, but her tears continued to flow, serving as a poignant reminder of her virtue and defiance against tyranny.
