Having seen numerous videos about Thailand and the Philippines, I felt it was time to provide a balanced perspective on Thailand specifically. My trip left me with mixed feelings, and I want to break down my observations into several key points.
Thailand can be a great destination for those on a tight budget, especially retirees or those living on a pension. If you choose to live like a local, you can get by on very little. However, if you desire modern amenities or a higher standard of living, you may find that costs can exceed those in places like Romania or other parts of Eastern Europe. The saying "you get what you pay for" rings true here; the more comfort and luxury you seek, the more you will have to spend.
One of the most alarming aspects of my trip was the pollution. The air quality in major cities like Bangkok and Samui was hazardous, often reaching levels categorized as "purple zone" on air quality indexes. The air was filled with unpleasant odors, and my travel companion developed a dry cough due to the poor air quality. Even on the islands, we found that pollution was a significant issue, exacerbated by practices like controlled burns in agriculture.
If you’ve been to pristine beaches in Europe, you might be disappointed by Thailand’s beaches. During my visit, I encountered dirty beaches with visible sewage runoff. In one instance, I saw diapers and other waste floating in the water, which made swimming unappealing. While there are some cleaner spots, many popular beaches suffer from pollution and overcrowding.
While food in Thailand is generally cheap, it’s essential to be cautious about where you eat. Street food can be a gamble, as hygiene standards are often lacking. I experienced food poisoning from a street vendor, which serves as a warning to others. If you’re not accustomed to local food hygiene practices, you might want to stick to more reputable restaurants.
Thailand’s infrastructure is struggling to keep up with the massive influx of tourists. The country is one of the most visited in the world, yet the facilities often do not support the number of visitors. This leads to issues like sewage runoff and inadequate waste management, which can detract from the overall experience.
Despite the challenges, the Thai people were a highlight of my trip. They are incredibly friendly, spiritual, and welcoming. Their kindness and hospitality stood out, making interactions enjoyable. However, it’s important to note that many locals face economic hardships, and the disparity between tourists and locals can be stark.
Thailand is known for its vibrant culture, but it also has a darker side. The presence of sex tourism is prevalent, with many establishments catering to this market. While some may view this as an honest exchange, it raises ethical concerns about the socio-economic conditions that lead individuals to such professions.
In summary, Thailand offers a unique blend of experiences, but it’s essential to approach it with realistic expectations. For those on a low budget or pension, it can provide a significant quality of life upgrade compared to Western countries. However, if you have a higher income, you might find better options in places like the Balkans or Southern Europe, where you can enjoy a higher standard of living without the drawbacks of pollution and infrastructure issues.
