AT&T expands D-Wave test, but a 15-second workload is not a network rollout

AT&T has signed an agreement to broaden its use of D-Wave's quantum-computing technology in network operations. The announcement turns an earlier, limited optimization exercise into a wider evaluation, not proof that quantum systems are ready to run a national carrier's network.
For D-Wave Quantum, the deal is a high-profile enterprise test. The company, founded in 1999, built its business around quantum annealing—an approach aimed at optimization rather than a universal computer—and is now also pursuing gate-model systems. AT&T is a consequential customer because it operates the network workflows being tested and says it serves more than 100 million U.S. families, friends and neighbors and nearly 2.5 million businesses.
The agreement is broader than the earlier test, but still prospective
In the announcement filed with the SEC, the companies say AT&T's initial focus is to layer D-Wave's annealing technology into tools that support its network agentic-AI work. The applications named are outage detection and response, technician routing, network-build planning and traffic management.
Lucus Haugen, AT&T's director of data science in its Chief Data Office, said the technology offers a new approach to optimization and compute-intensive network work. That is an AT&T assessment and a plan to explore applications, not a disclosure that any of those workflows has entered production.
The expansion follows earlier, limited use. A market report on the announcement said AT&T had previously paired D-Wave's technology with its existing systems for a workload, and described the new arrangement as extending into additional areas. It also reported D-Wave shares were up 7.1% in premarket trading. The companies did not disclose the agreement's financial terms in their announcement.
The speed result has no disclosed operational comparator
AT&T said an early network-optimization application reduced processing time from approximately one hour to less than 15 seconds. Taking one hour as 3,600 seconds and 15 seconds as the upper bound yields a reduction of at least 240-fold. It is not a precise performance ratio: the starting time is approximate and the faster result is stated only as less than 15 seconds.
