Explore five exceptional restaurants in Tokyo, from legendary chicken skewers to unique udon and unforgettable sukiyaki, perfect for food lovers seeking authentic Japanese cuisine.
Tokyo is a city that never ceases to amaze, especially when it comes to its culinary scene. If you find yourself in this vibrant metropolis, here are five restaurants that you absolutely must visit, each offering a unique taste of Japan.
After a long day of shopping in Ginza, a visit to T Jeene is a must for anyone craving delicious chicken skewers. Known for its exceptional yakitori, every skewer is grilled to perfection, ensuring a delightful experience for your taste buds. The smoky flavor and tender meat make it a favorite among locals and tourists alike.
If ramen is what you seek, head over to Ginza Kagari. Famous for its chicken and truffle ramen, this restaurant is a culinary treasure. Arriving at 5:00 p.m. might help you avoid the long lines, but be prepared to wait, as we found ourselves queuing for an hour. Unlike typical ramen spots like Ichiran or Katsu, Ginza Kagari offers a unique twist that is well worth the wait.
For those who appreciate the rich flavors of beef, Asa Imahan is a must-visit. Renowned for its beef sukiyaki, we recommend arriving at least half an hour before opening time on weekdays to secure a spot. While waiting, we enjoyed some gigantic s crackers, a delightful Kanto-style snack. The sukiyaki experience here is exceptional, featuring marbled wagyu beef cooked in a sweet umami sauce, paired with top-notch service. This is a quintessential dining experience in Japan.
Skip the Ginza branch and head to God Hanayama Udon at Nashi for a more manageable queue and an unforgettable udon experience. The long, flat, shiny udon served here is unlike anything you’ve tasted before. It’s absolutely delicious and highly recommended. Be prepared to queue, as this spot is worth every minute of your wait.
Our number one spot in Japan is Ishikawa, located in Tsukiji Market. This hidden gem is not well-known among tourists, so it’s best to visit before the crowds arrive. While waiting in line with locals, we enjoyed some iced matcha latte, setting the stage for what would be the best meal of our lives. Ishikawa specializes in grilled tuna, or yaki tuna, which is surprisingly delicious and stands out among the more common yaki niku and yaki chori. This experience solidified its place as our top pick during our second visit to Japan.
Tokyo's culinary landscape is rich and diverse, offering something for every palate. From the smoky delights of chicken skewers at T Jeene to the exquisite flavors of grilled tuna at Ishikawa, these five restaurants promise an unforgettable dining experience. Make sure to add them to your itinerary for a true taste of Japan.
