This blog post explores the transformation of a 1966 Land Rover Series 88 by Himalaya in Charleston, SC, highlighting its modern drivetrain, enhanced performance features, and upgraded interior while maintaining its classic aesthetic.
My name is Greg Shondell, and I am here with Himalaya to showcase a remarkable transformation of a 1966 Series 88 Land Rover. This vehicle has been reimagined by our talented team in Charleston, South Carolina, and today, we will take a closer look at the innovative upgrades that have been made while preserving the classic charm of this iconic vehicle.
The foundation of this reimagined Land Rover begins with a significant departure from the original design. We replaced the traditional leaf spring suspension with a custom coil sprung chassis. This upgrade not only enhances the vehicle's ride quality but also allows for the installation of larger axles, giving the Land Rover a more modern stance on the road.
To further improve the driving experience, we added a performance disc brake package and a power steering system. These enhancements provide the driver with greater control and confidence behind the wheel, making it easier to navigate various driving conditions.
When selecting an engine for this platform, we aimed for a balance of modern power, performance, and serviceability. The 6.2 L GM LS3 engine emerged as the perfect choice. This engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, delivering an impressive 425 horsepower. Whether cruising leisurely around town or merging onto the freeway, this engine ensures that the vehicle performs exceptionally well in all scenarios.
Inside the vehicle, we focused on elevating the interior while staying true to the classic look and feel of the original Series 2 Dash, which is one of the most iconic dashboards in automotive history. We chose modern gauges that not only integrate seamlessly with the GM engine but also fit within the factory gauge bezel, maintaining the vehicle's vintage aesthetic.
Our in-house upholstery team crafted a stunning interior finished in tan leather, complemented by wood accents. This includes beautifully designed steering wheel accents, a custom center console, and a rear floor finished in Mahogany and Ash. To enhance comfort, we also added heated seats, ensuring a pleasant driving experience regardless of the weather.
From a technology perspective, we aimed to keep modern features discreetly integrated into the vehicle. A custom center console was built to house a modern audio package, complete with Bluetooth connectivity and USB charging ports strategically hidden throughout the vehicle. This allows for a seamless blend of classic design and contemporary functionality.
From a distance, this Land Rover Series 88 retains the iconic look it had when it rolled off the factory floor in 1966. However, once you get behind the wheel, it becomes clear that this vehicle is undeniably something very different. The combination of modern performance, enhanced comfort, and thoughtful technology integration makes this reimagined classic a standout in the automotive world.
