MediaTek’s $2 Billion AI ASIC Figure Is a Fourth-Quarter Target
MediaTek says its AI ASIC business could contribute about $2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2026. That is a company target for one unnamed US hyperscaler project, distinct from its longer-term market-share goal and a separate report on revenue mix.
- MediaTek expects its AI ASIC business to contribute about $2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2026, according to its earnings-call transcript.
- The target is tied to a first project for an unnamed US hyperscaler; customer volume, pricing and margins remain undisclosed.
- A 10% to 15% share of a projected $70 billion to $80 billion market is a longer-term ambition, while an earlier 20% figure referred to MediaTek’s own revenue mix.
MediaTek’s headline AI-chip number is larger—and narrower—than the provisional reporting made clear. In its April 30 earnings call, the fabless semiconductor designer said its AI ASIC business should contribute around $2 billion of revenue in the fourth quarter of 2026. The company has elsewhere used broader wording for the figure, without explaining how the descriptions fit together. The transcript nevertheless makes the target unusually concentrated for a business still tied publicly to one undisclosed customer.
The clearest timing record is the earnings call
Dr. Rick Tsai, MediaTek’s chief executive, said in the April earnings-call transcript that the first AI-accelerator ASIC project for a US hyperscale customer was on schedule for production and that the business was expected to contribute about $2 billion in the fourth quarter. Tsai previously led Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. as president and CEO from 2005 to 2009 before joining MediaTek, as the company’s 2017 appointment announcement records. That manufacturing and supply-chain background is relevant to a project whose commercial result depends on production as much as chip design.
The primary transcript corroborates the contemporaneous report that put the $2 billion in the fourth quarter. But the time frame is not described uniformly across the retained record: another account said the project would contribute about $2 billion in 2026, and MediaTek’s later company post said it had raised AI data-center ASIC revenue guidance to $2 billion in 2026. Neither broader formulation explains how it relates to the exact fourth-quarter statement. The transcript is the clearest primary wording, but MediaTek has not reconciled the different descriptions.
The customer remains unnamed. The report said the design was for Google’s tensor processing units, but MediaTek did not name Google in the call. That makes the link to Google reported, rather than confirmed by the company, and leaves the project’s unit volume, pricing, product duration and margin contribution undisclosed.
