Reddit’s Q2 Growth Does Not Explain Its Google Exposure
Reddit’s revenue, profit and daily users rose sharply in the second quarter, but its disclosure of choppy search referrals leaves a central question unanswered: whether it can turn search visitors into durable app users as Google’s AI search changes the path to the site.
- Reddit’s Q2 filing shows 61% revenue growth and 18% growth in average daily users, alongside management’s warning that search referrals were choppy.
- The company has not disclosed the size, location or query mix of the referral swing, so it has not established that AI Overviews caused it.
- Reddit’s stated response is to convert more web users into app users; the missing evidence is the conversion rate and its durability.
Reddit’s second-quarter results make the search issue more precise, not more settled. The platform increased revenue and profit sharply while reporting more volatile search traffic late in the quarter. What investors and users cannot see from the disclosure is how much of that volatility came from Google, which visitors it affected, or whether product changes are turning those visitors into repeat users.

The quarter shows scale, but not where every user came from
Steve Huffman, Reddit’s co-founder and chief executive, leads a community platform whose shareholder letter says it has more than 26 billion posts and comments. In that letter, Reddit reported $804.9 million in Q2 revenue, up 61% from a year earlier, and $252.8 million in net income, compared with $89.3 million a year earlier.
Average global daily active uniques, or DAUq, reached 130.3 million, up 18%. Reddit defines DAUq as an identifiable user who visits its site or opens an app at least once in a 24-hour period; it is not a count of search referrals. Its average quarterly weekly active uniques were 514.6 million, a 24% increase.
The geographic figures show why a single referral narrative is incomplete. International daily users grew faster than U.S. daily users, while U.S. revenue per daily user remained much higher:
